Cedar Grove Friday Flash
February 26, 2021
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
Thank you to our many parents for attending our parent Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday evening to hear about our plan for partial in-person return of students to the school building. Information that was shared included schedule changes for all students, timelines, and safety protocols. This meeting was open for parents of all students. If you were unable to attend this meeting, please click this link for the slide deck presentation. A recording of the meeting may be viewed by clicking https://youtu.be/G2N7M4fBUe0. Parents may also access additional information from the "Return to Building Info" page on our Cedar Grove Canvas Classroom in the myMCPS Dashboard. Information is updated as it becomes available.
In order for teachers to prepare for their return to the building, please note that March 8 is now a professional day for teachers, and there will be no school for students that day. In addition, on March 9 and 10, students will be working independently on asynchronous activities. Please look for more information coming soon from your child's teacher on what students will be completing during those two days.
In addition, the MCPS Spring 2021 Recovery website provides an overview of the district’s plans for virtual and in-person learning experiences; extracurricular activities and athletics; operations, safety and logistics; and more. The website can be viewed here.
The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services has community COVID-19 testing available to all MCPS staff, students and family members. For staff and students who would like to be tested before returning to schools on March 1 and March 15, several county sites are available for nasal swab testing. Testing is free. No government ID or doctor's order are necessary. County-supported sites are averaging three to five days for lab results. Test results will be sent by email or text message. For more information, including a list of clinic sites, dates and times through the end of February, is available here.
Please take a moment to read the considerations below about health and safety.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Classroom Monitors Needed!
MCPS is looking for adults to support the supervision of students. If you know any adults with a high school diploma/GED who would be interested in monitoring students at $15.72 per hour, please encourage them to apply to be considered for the position of classroom monitor. Duties include monitoring classrooms of teachers who are providing virtual instruction to students in the building and supporting in-person teachers. Please note that Cedar Grove will need classroom monitors; however, we cannot guarantee where individuals will be assigned. Interested individuals need to apply on:
March Book Madness 2021!
March Book Madness is underway, and we hope your students are "reading" the books by going to the March Book Madness Slide Deck. They just need to click on a book cover and listen to the read aloud. And yes, as in past years, we have guest readers! Look for the first online ballot to vote on the first eight books of the bracket. The ballot for the first elimination round will also be linked to the first slide in the slide show. All responses are due Friday, March 5. Feel free to email Mrs. Hirschhorn if you have any questions!
Holds to Go at Cedar Grove ES - Important Update - Please read!
We will have our Holds to Go program on Wednesday, March 3 and Wednesday, March 10 as we have these past months. However, because some of our students will soon be returning to the building, we may suspend the program for a bit mid-March to adjust to our transition to serving patrons both inside and outside the building.
The first two Wednesdays in March are also the perfect time to return any overdue books that were checked out last spring. We would like to have these books returned so others may enjoy them. Students can log into their Destiny accounts and check their account for overdue materials. In fact, it would be very helpful if these returns came in before March 15, so I'm not drowning in books that need to be quarantined!
Just as a reminder:
- If you received an email letting you know that your holds to go are ready for pickup, please come by on Wednesday between 1 and 4 PM.
- Please have your child’s last name clearly printed, with the child's grade, in very large print to show to the staff member as you drive up to the table.
- Once we recognize the student's name, the staff member will place the books on the table for you or your student to pick up.
- Please place your library returns in the box marked "returns" on the table.
Please feel free to contact Mrs. Hirschhorn if you have any questions!
Tech Tips and Reminders
From Mrs. Hirschhorn, Media Specialist
As we start the month of March, there will be a lot of changes that will also affect our media program. Please make sure you take a good look at the March Media Monthly, bookmark it, and visit it often. It will be updated very often with important information, especially after March 15. Let's hope spring is really around the corner!
