Great 8 Skills
Tips on Teaching Self Awareness at Home
Ask them questions like, what are you telling yourself about yourself? Is it helpful? If not, what would be a more helpful thing to think or say?
Tip #2 Encourage your child to process their feelings.
Have them talk to a neutral person such as a school counselor or therapist. Journaling is another great way for kids to process their emotions and experiences.
Tip #3 Talk to your child about strengths and weaknesses.
Remind them that everyone has weaknesses! Share what you see in each other and talk about how strengths help us overcome our weaknesses. Share a story about when you overcame a challenge in your life by utilizing your strength(s).
Tip #4 Have regular check-ins.
At the end of the day, exchange the day's highs and lows with your child. Talk about the feelings associated with them and emphasize how those feelings could have possibly impacted those highs and lows.
Here are some thought provoking questions you can also ask your child:
– How do you talk to yourself about yourself?
– How did you use a strength today?
– What value is reflected in that choice?
– If you had a magic wand, what would you change? How would that change impact you? What action can you take that might initiate that change now?
– What qualities do you admire in others? Which of those qualities do you see in yourself?

New to North!!!
Nobody should eat lunch alone. Whether students are new to the district or just happen to have a different lunch period than their established friends, we want everyone to feel like they are part of the bunch. No matter what the lunch period, every Tuesday and Thursday, those who may feel lost at lunch will have the opportunity to eat lunch together along with the counselors for the first nine weeks of school.
