TEACHER OPPORTUNITIES
Global Trade Curriculum Workshop
ATTN teachers and principals interested in global trade and international business pathways:
We are looking for teachers across subjects who are interesting in finding ways to integrate global trade and international business into their classroom. Math, English, Science, Social Studies, CTE, or Foreign Language are all welcome!
The event is in Mission Valley on Tuesday April 21 from 4-6pm. Take a look at the flier here for more information.
To RSVP go to http://goo.gl/forms/UrGQMkw0pb
I encourage you to join us and pass the word along to your colleagues. We are looking for schools interested in expanding their career pathways so groups of teachers across disciplines from one site could easily lead to your school becoming one of the first academic linked pathways in global trade!
At this after school event we will pair stakeholders of the global trade and international business sector with each academic subject group to work on finding areas where the concepts within global trade intersect with your academic course. This is a great chance for brainstorming, networking and inspiration.
There are stipends for any curriculum you make inspired by this event. We are planning to use this as a starting point for a series of curriculum relating to our local job sectors. As the classroom teacher we need your expertise to create relevant and rigorous assignments to pair with case studies in business and global trade.
We hope you can make it. If you can't make it but are interested in getting future updates about global trade and international business events or curriculum availability please send me an email and I'll add you to our list!

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES
Women's Hackathon April 25, 2015 FREE!!!
If you're unfamiliar with 'hackathons,' they're just as they sound-- a daylong event designed, in this case, to get young women involved with programming, designing apps and experiencing the fun of working together on a creative project. Parking is free-- so is lunch and dinner. The caveat is it's at CSU San Marcos, and ends at 8:45pm (figure 45 minutes back to South Bay). But it's well worth the time if you can find interest and transportation for a team representing your site. Dr. Youwen Ouyang is the CSUSM Computer Science department chair and has run a number of these over the past few years-- all terrific opportunities for high and middle school students.
Click here to see 3 flyers for classroom postings.
For more information than what's in the attached flyers, you can visit the site at http://sandiegohackathon.org/us or contact Youwen @ ouyang@csusm.edu phone: 760.750.8047
"The Women’s Hackathon is designed to inspire young women to explore the unknown and open doors to opportunities in the tech sector. The 12-hour event is open to all female students, ages 16 and older, who will work collaboratively to design a website, game, or mobile app that addresses a selected real world challenge. No prior programming experience is required and registration is free. There may be up to 6 people in a team. Prior to the event, teams can plan, storyboard, and determine what they want to do and how they will go about building their solution. The only caveat is that no programming is allowed until the day of the event. All projects must be submitted to ChallengePost by 5:30 pm. Teams will present their projects to a panel of judges and the whole group. Depending on the final number of teams at the event, each team may have 3 - 5 minutes to present and 1 - 2 minutes to answer questions from the Judge Panel. Projects will be judged in 4 categories: Appropriateness to Theme, User Experience & Functionality, Originality & Impact, and Technical Difficulty."

Going Green in the Classroom!!!
"The aquaponics system setup that I have in my classroom is used to help
students better understand ecosystems and the cycling of matter and
energy. Students are also getting hands-on experience on how they can be
more sustainable through their own production of food in a manner that
requires 90% less water than traditional farming/gardening!"
