A Letter From our Principal
Dear Bridgeport Families,
I wanted to take a moment to let you know about our upcoming lockout and lockdown drills. This is one of the most difficult topics to discuss and yet we know that preparation for an emergency requiring one of these protocols is an important step in keeping students and staff safe. I hope that the information in this letter will help you and your student feel more prepared in the case of an emergency.
Our lockout drill will take place on February 20. A lockout protocol would be used to keep the children and staff indoors in the case that there is a threat in the neighborhood not directly related to our school. Law enforcement would advise us in this case and we would lock all of our external doors, keeping students inside and operating business as usual until the threat has passed. In the case of the portables, we would work closely with law enforcement to determine if the length of the lockdown would require transitioning students indoors and the safest way to facilitate that transition. In the case that there was an imminent threat directed at or inside of our school, we would initiate a lockdown protocol. Our lockdown drill will take place on February 25. In a lockdown, external and internal doors are locked, lights are turned off, and students wait silently in the least visible part of their classroom. Students who are in the bathroom or transitioning between classrooms at this time should go to the closest classroom and follow the teacher’s instructions.
As a staff we review the procedures for these drills regularly and debrief following each drill, clarifying questions and ensuring we are prepared in the case of an emergency. These drills are always planned teachers prepare students ahead of time by explaining that in the case of an emergency, being prepared for what to do can keep everyone safe. Depending on the grade level of the students, teachers take questions and work to help students understand without dwelling for too long on factors children cannot control and which may provoke unnecessary anxiety.
For many students, talking through these drills at home before they happen can help ease their nerves. Remind them that Bridgeport is a safe building where adults have to pass through the office to get to classrooms. Also, remind them that all of the staff members are trained on what to do in the case of an emergency and will keep their safety as the top priority. Lastly, and most importantly, remind them that practicing for this, just like a fire drill, is one way they can be prepared for an emergency.
If you are interested in learning more about our drill protocols, here is the link to the training video for our Standard Response Protocol. As always, please contact me or your student’s teacher if you have any questions. Thank you for your partnership in navigating this difficult topic with our students.
Sincerely,
Jordan Mills
