Dear South Meadows Families,
We hope May is treating you well! We are working hard in our classes so that our students finish this school year as strongly as possible. Despite the many challenges we've faced over the past year, I know that South Meadows students and staff are resilient and we will end this school year stronger than when we began it. This is why we have so much to celebrate! Three of our staff have been nominated for the Crystal Apple Excellence in Education Award: José Barraza, Guadalupe Pedraza, and Nicole Brown. We are also happy for Mr. Barraza for his new position as the principal of Eastwood Elementary School. We'll miss him very much, but we know that the Eastwood Community is extremely lucky to have his leadership. As we work on finding a replacement for the Assistant Principal Position, we would love to have your input. Here is a form for Family Feedback about what you would like our new Assistant Principal to bring to our school. Thanks for filling it out!
Now that we are settled into hybrid education, we want to remind everyone who comes in person that we still need them to sign on to their live classes on the days that they are at home. We need our students every day, so from home or not, please make sure you're student is signing in and staying caught up in their learning!
As we approach the end of the school year, we are excited to wish our 8th graders well as they transition to high school. We'll have certificates for all 8th graders with various seals of excellence for their achievements prepared. These will be passed out to them on Thursday, June 17 from 3:00 to 6:00 and on Friday, June 18th from 12:00 to 4:00. You can just drive up to the front of the school, get your certificate, take a picture, and drop off any supplies including Chromebooks that you got from South Meadows.
Another exciting piece of news is that we are expanding our class offerings and lowering class size by having seven periods next year instead of six! This is going to allow students more options and support. The school day will be the same amount of time; however, we've rearranged it so we have an additional class period starting next year. Hooray!
Here is a summary of the state testing details. If you haven't filled out the opt-out forms, we are planning on your child coming to take the state tests this year. If you haven't filled out a form, and you do not want your child to come to school to take the test, it isn't too late. Thanks for helping us plan ahead to ensure students who take the test have as much support as possible and that we ensure our testing environment is safe and follows all COVID prevention measures.
7th graders will test on Wednesday 5/26 in Language Arts and Math. We'll begin at 1:00 and end at 4:00. This should be enough time for students to finish. Busses will be coming if you need transportation. When we know their pick-up and drop-off times, we'll share that with you. If your child will not be taking the test this year at the time listed above, PLEASE fill out the form:

8th graders will test on Wednesday 6/2 in Math and Science. We'll begin at 1:00 and end at 4:00. This should be enough time for students to finish. Busses will be coming if you need transportation. When we know their pick-up and drop-off times, we'll share that with you. If your child will not be taking the test this year at the time listed above, PLEASE fill out the forms (8th graders have to fill out two forms to opt out because Science is from a different testing department):
Opt-out Form in English for Math: https://forms.gle/UwYLJesidbo5oapB6
Opt-out Form in Spanish for Math: https://forms.gle/ENuqULeGDPMYgLHi9
OSAS Science Exemption from State Testing Form (English): https://forms.gle/NWnCKsaR37BPSb6K9
OSAS Science Exemption From State Testing Form (Spanish): https://forms.gle/E84EutK73PTAG94S6
We'll be sending out follow-up reminders over the next two weeks to fill out the opt out forms if you will NOT be having your student come to test this year as it will be very, very helpful to have an accurate count of students who will test. We are excited to see positive testing results for anyone that does come! Please let us know if you have any questions by contacting José Barraza at barrazaj@hsd.k12.or.us and we'll be sure to answer them for you. Thanks for your help in this matter as we prepare the best testing environment possible for our amazing students this year.
Thank you!

¡Gracias!
