Memorial Day Weekend
Spiritual Life - Little Bites from Heaven
What are Little Bites from Heaven? The Spiritual Life Committee knows how important faith is to our families at DeSales. However, we also know families lead busy lives and finding time to sit down to foster that faith, read the Bible together and answer the questions our children have about God sometimes takes a back seat to other things. That’s why we think Little Bites from Heaven is a great tool to do just this. Dinnertime allows an opportunity to connect over food while having fun, joyful and meaningful faith-building conversations with your children. Little Bites from Heaven provides devotional time for all family members that includes scripture, questions to discuss and a short devotional. It’s as simple as read the scripture and devotion and discuss the questions together. We believe Little Bites from Heaven will help to prioritize what is most important and at the same time, foster and grow a deeper understanding of your family’s faith rooted in Jesus Christ.
Devotional: Seeing Things that can’t be seen
Have you ever watched a movie or read a book about a character who could become invisible? We might accept it for the world of fantasy, but if someone told us to look at something invisible in the real world, we would think he or she was either a little crazy or trying to trick us. But several times in the Bible we are told to “see” something that is invisible, so it must be possible.
Paul writes that “we live by believing and not by seeing” (2 Cor. 5:7) This means that the most precious and important realities in the world are beyond our five senses. So we “look” at these realities through what we know of Christ from the Bible. These truths about him were recorded by faithful witnesses who saw him and hear his voice and wrote down his message for us.
What are the things the Bible says we should “fix our gaze on” that cannot be seen? We have never seen Jesus withour physical eyes, and yet we fix our eyes of faith on him, and we believe. We can’t see God’s invisible hand working behind the scenes of history and in our lives, and yet by faith we believe it. We have never seen a place called heaven and can’t find it on a map, and we can’t imagine what it would be like. Yet we fix our eyes of faith on God’s promises of the place he is preparing for us, and we believe.
This is faith – spiritually seeing God and recognizing him as the ultimate reality of the Universe, the most solid truth in all creation, even though He cannot be seen with the human eye.
Scripture:
You can have a Bible close to the dinner table to use during devotions. The kids can take turns reading the scripture each week out of the Bible!
“Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see” Herbrews 11:1
Discussion Questions (pick a couple or all questions and allow for everyone to answer. There’s no answer key! As parents, we sometimes think we have to have all the answers, but we don’t. It’s ok to sometimes not have all the answers! But God does and it’s good to let our kids know when tough questions arise that some things only God knows, and we can’t always understand, but we can always trust Him )
1. What are some invisible things you wish you could see?
2. Is this kind of “seeing” a feeling or a decision or a gift?
3. What things do we have now to base belief on that the people of the Old Testament did not have?
