Just for Freshmen
We know that 9th grade is the hardest in terms of transition, but also the one where students experience the biggest amount of growth. This page will be updated to include the most up-to-date information for parents of freshmen so that we can work together to help them reach success!
From Our Marauder Captains
Final Exams
For most of our 9th grade students, this semester is the first time that they have to take a final exam. Like any test, it's important not to cram too much studying in at a time. While it can be daunting to think about taking a test over the entire semester, our teachers understand and build in plenty of review. There are several ways that you can help as a parent:
- Ask your child how they plan to study for their finals. What will they review? Do they have study guides or a study plan?
- Encourage your child to go to our study sessions after school or with our Marauder Captains.
- Ask your child if they know their current progress in their class and what they need to earn on their final to get the grade they desire. Finals are 20% of the overall grade.
Why is 9th Grade So Important?
Multiple studies show that a student's success in 9th grade is directly linked to their chances of graduation. There are multiple reasons why 9th grade is challenging for students including:
- Academic expectations become more challenging
- Students socially seek more independence, attempting to navigate peer relationships alone while distancing from adults in their lives
- Credit is introduced, something that students have not experienced before
- Students can feel lost in a larger environment
At Carlson, we are working to make sure that our 9th-grade students make it to 10th grade and have many opportunities, but these are the ones that specifically for our freshmen:
- Intervention in every core area
- After-school tutoring with National Honor Society students and Marauder Captains
- Freshman Transitions during Advisory
- Marauder Captains for every student
If you are concerned about how your child is progressing in 9th grade, please contact his/her teachers and counselor to put a plan in place now.
