January 2020 Edition
From Our Superintendent
The end of a year is the perfect time to pause and recognize where we have been and where we are headed!
In reflecting back on our 2019 story, we recognize some of the great accomplishments to support our students learning in the district:
- District-wide implementation of K-6 Social and Emotional Learning Instruction (T.R.A.C.)
- Opening of our two new state of the art district-wide Research and Design Studios at Farm Lab
- Implementation of new, pilot mathematics resources
- Implementation of many new sustainability products and practices including steam weed abatement, chemical free, electrostatic cleaners for disinfecting spaces, and battery-operated leaf blowers
- Increased use of conceptual/sense-making strategies in the areas of mathematics and science
- Next Generation Science standards and strategies being used
- CA Dashboard Ratings of Blue (or the highest level) in English Language Arts and Mathematics
- Increased gains in Language Arts and Language Acquisition for our English Learners
- Implementation of Newcomer support via Newcomer Academies
- Increased emphasis on personalized learning for students as we recognize their stories and work to engage learners to content with their unique needs and abilities in mind
- District-wide purchase of Raptor Visitor Management Safety System
We are excited to announce as we begin 2020, we are moving ahead with creating a district-wide comprehensive Facilities Master Plan. Students must have learning spaces and environments that are world class and meet the needs of the whole child. We will be working with LPA Design Studios over the next six months to review how our spaces are maintained and utilized, and to consider how we can best address district educational goals for the future. Each site and each space will be reviewed with stakeholder input to establish a clear vision for what we want our educational environment to be for our students in the next three, five and ten years.
Along with the District’s forward momentum, we recognize that it is you – our team of professionals – who continue to stay focused on knowing each child and their stories, strengths and gifts. This personalized approach ensures that we provide the best educational program possible. Your passion for what you do to support all students is what truly makes Encinitas successful in continuously improving the opportunities and environment we provide for our students.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to knowing our students and each other!
Warmly,
Andrée Grey, Ed.D.

Illuminate SIS (Student Information System) Transition
As we shared last month, Illuminate will no longer be offering their SIS services. Our transition committee met in early December to review presentations by Aeries and Power School, and to research all the options available as we prepare to adopt a new SIS to be effective July 1, 2020. This includes the teacher gradebook, report card features, and assessments, which our committee’s teachers paid close attention to in the presentations. As soon as we have made a decision and have information about the transition and upcoming trainings, we will let you know. For questions, feel free to reach out to Glen Warren, Nathan Short, or Amy Illingworth.
Math Update
If your students haven’t started the second iReady Diagnostic, please make sure you assign it to your students and schedule time to administer the assessment within the next two weeks. The Math Committee will be meeting again on 1/23 and look forward to receiving a second round of feedback from all teachers. To complete that feedback, please fill out the survey here. As we move into the second half of the year, we will be seeking input on which teachers would like to join our CGI professional development strand for the 2020-21 school year. If you haven’t begun the CGI PD yet, please take this time to talk to your colleagues who are in the training to hear about the benefits to student learning.
Reminder: Our District First Friday of January has been moved to January 31 based on your feedback! Your principal will have more information for you in the coming weeks.
Let's Hear from our EL Learners!
“I believe deeply that we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together- unless we perfect our union by understanding that we may have different stories, but we hold common hopes; that we may not look the same and may not come from the same place, but we all want to move in the same direction: toward a better future for our children and our grandchildren.”
-Barack Obama (2008)
I am humbled by the extraordinary significance of the work we do. Preparing our English learners, and all of our students, to collaboratively solve the “challenges of our time” is a multifaceted and complex task. I believe the first step is to listen. By listening to the stories of our students we empower their voice, increase their agency, and strengthen their connectedness. We give them a sense of belonging in our school community and a sense of value. Imbuing our students with these qualities will serve them well as they strive to build a better future. With this in mind, I asked some of our newcomers about their school experience, and what they liked best about school. Their answers validate our focus on building relationships. Watch the short video linked below to hear their stories!

Farm Lab News...
We finally have chickens and roosters on the farm!
The new Research and Design spaces are open! We look forward to hosting classes from around the district so that teachers and their students can visit Farm Lab more than once a year!
Teachers can do their own projects in the spaces with the tools and resources available. (Nutrition science lab, robotics, film, etc.)
Teachers can sign up for technology workshops in the Rosemary Room or for a seasonal farm to table recipe in the Dill Room
Check out the R&D Powerschool page for all of the details - and to sign-up!
All first graders visited the DREAMS Campus in December to learn different ways plants help us. They helped us with organic pest control by coding Ozobots to scare off bunnies and squirrels before they ate our school lunch produce! We’re hoping their teachers sign up to come back to Farm Lab and use the Ozobots for their own project in the Rosemary Room!
Season 3 of Salad Wars is here! The DREAMS Campus will be hosting all 6th graders over the next few months for their week-long entrepreneurial experience.
ASPIRE Enrollment for the 2020-21 School Year
ASPIRE registration for the 2020-21 school year will open on February 3, 2020. Please note, due to the high volume of enrollment at the beginning of the school year, all registrations submitted after 8/11/20 will not be eligible to start until 8/24/20.
All returning students must register each school year. On or after February 3, 2020, you may register online at www.eusd.net/enrichment or submit a hard copy registration form, which can be found in the front offices and ASPIRE classrooms. All current balances must be paid in order to register. A $35 non-refundable registration fee is required upon submission. Please register early to ensure that your child has a spot for the next school year, as some schools reach capacity quickly and require a waitlist to be utilized.
If you have any questions regarding the registration process, please contact Kathleen Morrow at Aspire.registration@eusd.net or (760) 944-4300 ext. 1143.
