ARC Focus of the Week
As we wind down the year, please continue to conference with your students and add growth points. Students can no longer be moved to the next reading level, but they can have points added in transition. We will continue to conference with our students up until June 7. Let's finish strong!
Please continue to encourage engaged reading. Every minute of reading counts!
On Target for IRLA Reading Level
We have advanced another month and our growth is down. Our goal is for every child to show at least a year of growth this school year.
At this point in the year, our students should be at these points:
K-.90
1st-1.90
2nd-2.90
3rd-3.90
4th-4.90
HES creates readers!
1hour of reading each day equals more than 2.66 years of growth without any other interventions.
On Target for Reading Practice
We only have 5 days to count steps. Keep encouraging your students to read, even after the step counting has ended. It is not really about the steps, it is about engaged reading!
Steps calendar for this month and next
Turnaround Tuesday
Our next "Turnaround Tuesday" will be next Friday, June 7th. Since that is the last day to count steps, I will not be passing out additional books. Please have all of your book bins in the book room by the close of business on Friday, June 7th. We will be using classroom books for reading for the following week. If you are in need of classroom books, please let me know and I will get you baskets of "HES" books to use.
Teach the Teacher
Because reading is SO much more than gaining steps....
This blog post has such great insight into the value of recognizing small, significant accomplishments. Click below for this thought-provoking read! The end of the post has an interesting idea that we might want to explore for next year. What are your thoughts?
Great Idea!
Mrs. Knight shared a great idea she had for getting students to return "overdue" ARC and genre library books. She talked with her class about the importance of bringing back the books and how they would not be in trouble AT ALL. One of her students brought back a very tall stack of books and not only did Mrs. Knight not scold her (kudos to you!), she actually celebrated the student bringing back all of the books. Great idea, Mrs. Knight!
LOVE this idea for organizing student helpers!
You could have a "librarian in training" team who would be responsible for making sure the correct books were in the correct bin, damaged books were put into the book hospital, signing off steps....there are lots of possibilities!
Don't you just want to see what is on these shelves?
I am thinking now of how I want to display books in a more attractive way next year. Something to think about!
Love this idea for bringing a little fun and helping to keep the messes at bay.
This little "door" is for the desk fairy who comes to visit student's work areas when they are not looking and leave a small treat or happy note about their neat desk. She is also known to leave notes of concern for those who need a little work...
