Study Trip to Castleton Mall and Lunch at Buca Di Beppo

Our study trip was a huge success! The kids were able to identify and find many goods and services that the mall provided. We were also able to enjoy each other's company while eating lunch at Buca! Don't forget to ask your child about one good and one service they were able to locate at the mall! While discussing this in class, they came back with many great examples! We made lots of fun memories together in our groups (as you can see in the pictures above :) Thank you to all of our parents who were able to go along and chaperone with us on this trip!!

Ice Cream

This week, the kids were able to make homemade ice cream. We spent some time last week researching what ingredients we needed to get and what we needed to do to make the ice cream. Then we put our plan into action! As we made our ice cream, some noticed that they needed to shake and move their bags in different ways to get their liquid to harden. It was a really cool learning experience and the ice cream turned out better than I even thought it would! We might have a future business on our hands ;).

E-Learning

Don't forget that your child needed to have 4 out of the 5 activities from their eLearning menu completed Thursday, February 7th! They also needed to have 2 out of the 5 activities completed from Friday's eLearning Menu by Friday, February 8th! Please let me know if you have any questions about these assignments or how to turn them in! If you have not turned them in, please do so ASAP!!! Thank you!

Global Day of Play

On Wednesday our classroom celebrated Global School Day of Play. We had so much fun learning how to play new games with our friends and also creating and designing activities that we could play together! Unstructured play is vital to the development of a child. Our goal is to teach children about the importance of play by making it a priority!!

Congrats to Darla, Makayla, Adelyn, and Kendall for showing one of the "High 5" Traits of TCE behavior this month! We are SO lucky to have you as a part of our class and school family!! Keep up the AMAZING work!

Scholastic Book Order

The February book order will be sent home today. Our class order code is: GQVB8. I will place our class order next Friday!

Steve the Bunny

I would love to have Steve, our school bunny join us in our classroom for the week. If your child has any sort of allergy or has a fear of bunnies, please let me know!

Boxes Needed!

We will be doing a fun project with our economics study but need your help! We are looking for boxes like shoeboxes, or any reasonably sized box that will be easy for your child to carry to school. The kids will be working on this project early next week!

Friendship Party

Friendship Party on February 14th:

The Friendship Parties this year will be held on Thursday, February 14th from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m. Information from room parents will be sent home regarding volunteers.

Students will be participating in a Valentine Exchange with their classmates. We have 22 students in our classroom. Please note that students may NOT distribute Valentines that include food, candy, or balloons.

If you have any specific questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

Yearbooks Are on Sale

Yearbooks are on sale! The cost of the yearbook is $16 per book. To order a yearbook this year, you will need to order online at www.inter-state.com/yearbook . We will not be accepting cash or checks this year. All orders are due by March 22nd. To place an order online, enter in the code 36760V. The yearbooks will be shipped to TCE and passed out to the students near the end of May. Happy ordering!

*** Important information regarding Chinese Snack Tasting is included in this newsletter and your response is needed if you decide to opt-out.***

In the recent two weeks 1st to 4th grade students have been learning how to say some animals in Chinese. 2nd-4th grade students are doing a great job using the verbs “like” and “have” to form sentences like “I have cats”, “You don’t have dogs”, “I like horses”, and “You don’t like snake”. They also learned how to ask questions like “Do you like horses?” and “Don’t you like rabbits?” in Chinese. I am so impressed with how quickly they learn! 1st grade students had lots of fun learning about the 12 Chinese zodiac animals and coloring Happy New Year 2019, the Year of Pig.

During the week of February 11, 2019, students will be tasting a Chinese snack during their Global Studies class. Please see picture below for the nutrition information. If you do NOT wish your child to taste the snack, please fill out the Opt-Out form by following the link below and submit your response by February 1st, 2019. We will also send out paper permission slips home for certain students with allergy concerns. Thank you for your attention!

Inventors Box

During exploring time, our students would like to create things with recycled items! Our classroom is in need of any items that we can use to create and invent things with!! We love turning trash into new and exciting inventions and creations!

Some items that we need and brainstormed together are:

boxes (any size cereal, pop tart, cracker, mac and cheese etc..)

toilet/paper towel rolls

Please consider sending a snack to school with your child each day. Our approved list (to keep all of our Cardinals safe - especially those living with food allergies) include:

Background Checks & Anti-Bullying Video

All who desire to volunteer, chaperone fieldtrips, or eat lunch in the cafeteria must have an approved background check on file and complete the Anti-bullying video. Background checks are good for 3 years. If you have questions about your background check, please contact the TCE office @ (317) 594-4310.

Optional Spelling Practice at Home

On Monday, a new set of words will be sent home with your child. We will work with these words for two weeks at a time. Feel free to practice these sorts at home! Also, I will not be giving spelling tests over these words this year, but rather check with each student by checking to see if they can spell the words based on their spelling patterns.

Repeated Sort: Students will sort their words. Then check their words using the answer key. Then sort their words again!

Draw and Label: Students choose 10 of their words. Then they will draw a picture of each world and label it.

Blind Sort: Using given guide words, or headers, students spell or write in words in the correct category as a partner calls each word aloud without showing it.

Writing Sort: Students write their words under the correct category.

Speed Sort: Students sort words quickly under the correct categories (use a timer to see how fast they can do it!) Students love to beat records and to set goals for themselves.

Word Hunt: Students hunt through their own reading and writing for words that are additional examples of the sound, pattern, or meaning unit they study!

Buddy Sort: Using the given headers, students sort their words with a partner, then discuss. They will then check their work with their answer key.

We are Learning

Reading

Next week, we will be wrapping up our discussions and practice with nonfiction.

Writing

The kids are still working hard on their nonfiction books. Most of the kids have moved into their final drafts. They are doing such a great job and are applying the nonfiction features that they have learned to their writing.

Math

This week, we continued our study of money! The kids work hard to identify coins and their values, learn to count the biggest coins first, and to count a group of coins. We talked about how to write a dollar and cents. Additionally, we've talked about how to use different coins to make the same amount of money. Next week, we will focus on adding and subtracting different amounts of money!


Thank you so much for sending money for your child. It has been an amazing asset in teaching these lessons. We will continue to use this money next week!

Social Studies

Second grade will be studying economics over the coming weeks. We will deepen our understanding of goods vs. services, consumers vs. producers, needs vs. wants, and human, capital, and natural resources. We will culminate our study of economics with a mini PBL where each child will build a community building for our classroom that will provide a good/service! They will then share about their creation with the class!
