Shumate Family Update
October 28, 2022
Conferences - THANK YOU!
We want to thank all of our parents for partnering with us to maintain strong educational communication at last week's Parent/Teacher Conferences. Conferences present a wonderful opportunity for teachers and parents to sit down (albeit virtually) to discuss academic and social progress. Conferences are a chance for both the teacher and parent to ask questions, share relevant information, calibrate expectations, celebrate accomplishments, and set short and long term goals. Walking through the hallways, we overheard tremendously thorough and thoughtful discussion. This should be the beginning of year-long communication between parents and school. Please continue to check MiStar for academic progress and reach out to teachers as needed. It truly takes a team to fully support our students during their middle school years!
Black and Orange Spirit Day - No Halloween Costumes at SMS
WE were so happy to help the SMS Parent Group host this year’s Halloween activity Night. An incredible number of students dressed in their costumes and danced the night away! We saw numerous HUGE inflatable costumes of all sizes, outrageous wigs, wings, capes and other extraordinary costumes. Being rooted squarely in the “middle” here at SMS means that we want to support our students as they engage in childhood fun, but we also need to facilitate opportunities for high level academic activities within our classrooms. To that end, we do not allow costumes at SMS during the school day. Costumes too often contribute to distractions in class, and we need to maximize all learning opportunities. In place of costumes, we are encouraging students to take part in a “Black and Orange” spirit day if they want to show their Halloween spirit on Monday. As an added bonus, Student Council is also sponsoring a Pajama Day on Tuesday for all of our tired trick-or-treaters.

6th Grade Advisory Change
Our 6th grade ADVISORY classes will change for the 2nd Quarter. This change will not impact 7th or 8th grade ADVISORY classes. All 6th grade Advisory classes will be linked to the students’ 2nd hour class beginning on 11/7, and extend through the end of the year. Students will report to the same teacher/classroom during ADVISORY as they do for 2nd hour. Students will receive this information again when we hand out their Second Quarter schedules during 1st hour on 11/7.
