Student Safety
Cardinal Elementary
January 30, 2024
Cardinal Elementary Families,
Yesterday afternoon, Monday January 29th, a second grade student was nearly hit by a car in the west parking lot. The student was running to a parked car. Fortunately, another parent was standing on the sidewalk and was able to grab the student to keep them from running in front of a car.
This is a scary and important reminder about the importance of following the procedures in the parking lots.
Here at school, we will be producing a CNN News story for students to watch and showing it regularly. Additionally, administrators are meeting with staff and students about safety at drop off and pick up. We will continue to monitor parking lots and share information with families.
We need families who are dropping off or picking up students to please follow these procedures:
- Students may ONLY be dropped off and picked up in the right lane. Students may not be picked up and dropped off in the left lane under any circumstance.
- If you want to park and drop your students, you must use the west lot and students must cross at the crosswalk.
- If you are using the front drop off, you must use the right pick up/drop off lane. If you wish to park, use the west lot.
- All families are asked to wait their turn in line. We have a few families that think it is ok to cut to the front of the line. Once you reach the sidewalk areas, your student may exit the vehicle and you may exit into the left lane.
- We ask that families pull all the way forward to keep the drop off/pick up lines moving.
- NEVER yell to or call for your children to run across the lanes to your car.
- Please talk to your children about the importance of using the crosswalk and crossing traffic safely.
We will do our best to keep the lines moving as efficiently as possible, but we will follow safety procedures first and foremost. Our kids are worth the wait.
Sincerely,
Cardinal Elementary Administrators
