NAESP: Report to Parents - Setting Goals
Fall Conference days are on the District Calendar and preparations are being made with your child's teacher(s) as the first trimester comes to a close near the beginning of December. This time to meet is a great opportunity to pause to review how students are doing, not only academically, but social/emotionally, too. It is also an important time for students and families to set goals with their teacher as we look forward to the rest of the year. This month's NAESP: Report to Parents focuses on "Goal Setting" and how families might set goals at home, too.

School Happenings
Veteran's Day 11/11/21
November 11th is a day we honor all Veterans from our Military and Armed Forces. To honor Veteran's Day, we held activities across the school to help our students understand, appreciate, and honor those in our community who sacrificed for our freedoms. To help recognize, our morning announcements featured two elementary-appropriate, informational-based videos that explained the history of November 11th, Veteran's Day. Additionally, following the practice of the "setting a table" from the book, America's White Table, by Margot Theis Raven, a table with the story was on display in our main foyer for the day as a symbol for and remembrance to service members fallen, missing, or held captive in the line of duty. Students and staff wore red, white and blue and patriotic clothing to show their support in addition to many classroom activities completed throughout the day - like cards, letters, and flags - which will be shared with local agencies in the community.
Candy for the Troops
Our Butler Bears showed they can be "Butler Better" by generously donating their Halloween candy to veterans and military personnel. The donations from our students and staff surpassed our collection from last year! We are proud to know that our candy donations will be going to Biddle Air Guard Base (formally Willow Grove Base, Horsham Air Station), Ft. Indiantown Gap and Ft Dix (Army)/ McGuire (Air Force) / Lakehurse (Navy) for those deployed, the Blue Star Mothers of America, Philadelphia chapter's deployed, sons and daughters, Veterans at Coatesville VA Hospital, Philadelphia VA Hospital, PA State run nursing home in Spring City, PA and some local veterans in Montgomery County. Thank you to the Butler Community!
Election Day - 11/2/21
November 2nd Day of LiveStreaming
With Election Day voting on-site at Butler (and elsewhere across the district), schools were closed, but learning continued, taking place virtually! On November 2nd, CBSD held a day of LIVE, online, virtual learning for all students K-12. Leading up to the Tuesday, our CBSD IT Department had been working to support teachers in the implementation of the technology for all students. Butler's Instructional and Technology Coaches (& QUEST Teachers), held multiple work sessions on best practices on ideas to support the day's LiveStreaming instruction. Both teachers and students practiced in the days leading up to Tuesday so that it went smooth. It was a successful day of streaming as classrooms continued the learning process (virtually). Thanks to everyone for their support and training opportunities!
Snack with the Principal - Butler Students Rewarded with their Positive Paw Power
Butler Elementary School practices the Power Paw Attributes of B.U.T.L.E.R.
Butler: Understanding; Teamwork; Leadership; Educational Excellence; Respect
Each week, students earn Positive Paw Powers for their good behaviors and positive attitudes at school. Children enter them into our collection bin where names are then drawn for a special "Snack with the Principal" each Friday for every grade level.
On Friday, November 5th, Butler Principals, Mr. Funseth & Dr. Doherty, held Snack with the Principal to recognize and thank our students for being model Butler Bears with their great behaviors. All students received certificates and enjoyed a pretzel - great job students!
Department Updates
Counselor's Corner - SPARKS
As parents, we have had to consider the impact of the last 18 month on our children. Steven Mintz, an historian at the University of Texas at Austin and author of “Huck’s Raft: A History of American Childhood,” believes that traumatic events can leave “invisible scars” that might shape the character of a generation. However, recent studies have indicated that this might take the form of being more focused about the future such as their place in the world and a stronger commitment to social issues. Although we may see a cautious approach from our children, they may also be energized and optimistic about what lies ahead. Students may find themselves exploring new career paths and ready to take action. This is where we may see the resiliency and empathy that many young people have when faced with struggles. Losing time in the past year can be seen as a negative but also as an opportunity to appreciate what is ahead. Take a moment and ask your daughter or son what the future looks like. Can they connect their thoughts to the career education activities they are working on this school year in Smart Futures and Naviance?
