Important Information
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I would like you to know about a recent internet game about which you may want to become more informed. The “Momo Challenge” or “Momo Game” is an online phenomenon and a hoax that has gained familiarity as it has spread through social media. The Momo character has shown up recently in unofficial Minecraft mods and as a discussion topic in popular YouTube videos. It has been reported that children and adolescents are being enticed by a user named Momo to perform a series of dangerous tasks.
Parents need to be cognizant of the material their children are accessing online. Parents should caution children to (1) never share personal information (not even a name!) with others on the internet, (2) tell their parents if anyone tries to get their personal information, (3) not automatically believe what they see/hear/read on the internet, and (4) tell a trusted adult if you ever see anything scary or confusing.
As always, please let me know if you have any concerns or questions.
Mrs. Melancon
A Note from the Nurse....Mrs. Compton
Any medication (cough drops, OTC meds, Rx meds) that is required throughout the day must be brought to the clinic by a parent, guardian or other responsible adult. For the safety and protection of all students, medication will not be sent home with students.
As a gentle reminder, a sick child who is unable to participate in school in a meaningful way should be kept home to rest and recover until symptoms resolve. Keeping a sick child home also protects other children, school staff, and visiting community members from contracting an illness that can be spread from person to person.
From the Library....Mrs. Jones
Overdue Books
When your child has an overdue book, and email will go home to the parent or guardian and the student is reminded to return the book. Your child can continue to check out books because our goal is to build lifelong readers and we can only do this if we put books in the hands of our children. If you have any questions or concerns, contact me at deborah.jones@cfisd.net.
Name That Book
Congratulation to the Book Genies, fourth grade NTB team who will move on to the district competition held at the Berry Center on March 26th. The members of the team are Mikayla Huynh, Anais Jouffron, Cassie Lin, Katelynn Linden, Fernanda Martinez, Sophia Selinidis, and Jewel Taylor. The team can be found on most days reading and practicing clues during their recess. I am very proud of their dedication and hard work.
Thank You!
The book fair was a tremendous success! The profits from the book fair will go to host two authors next school year and to purchase new books for our students. This is made possible to the generous support of our volunteers who help to setup the book fair, cashier, and pack up the fair. Thank you to all the volunteers, both parents and staff members!
PBIS NEWS
The Wall of Hearts in the cafeteria was full from all the positive behavior in February! Please continue to encourage ROAR (Respectful, On-Task, Accountable & Responsible) behavior. We will have another PBIS raffle after Spring Break where students can put in their Tiger Bucks for a chance to win the grade level prize. We appreciate all your support in helping our students have positive behaviors by talking to them about their ROAR Reports and giving positive and negative consequences at home to make the connection that we're all a team.
From the Counselor....Mrs. Salazar
Keep the Lines of Communication Open
Research tells us that children really do look to parents and caregivers for advice and help on tough decisions. Spending at least 15 minutes a day focusing on talking can reassure kids that they can talk to their parents if they have a problem. Start conversations about daily life and their feelings.
- Be interested and try to remove distractions (phones, TV and other tasks).
- Talk with and listen to your child. Ask each other open ended questions and share experiences that they have to say more than yes or no.
- Discuss what your child learned, friendships and interests.
- Let your child know that they are a priority and education is important by reading by looking at your child’s school papers and go over them together. Celebrate growth, make corrections and talk about events happening at school.
Encourage Kids to Do What They Love
Help kids take part in activities, interests, and hobbies they like. Kids can volunteer, play sports, sing in a chorus, or join a youth group or school club. These activities give kids a chance to have fun and meet others with the same interests. They can build confidence and friendships that help self-esteem.
Model How to Treat Others with Kindness and Respect
Kids learn from adults’ actions. By treating others with kindness and respect, adults show the kids in their lives that there is no place for disrespect. Even if it seems like they are not paying attention, kids are watching how the adults around them manage stress and conflict, as well as how they treat their friends, colleagues, and families. So as we work together to teach social and emotional learning, we will see our students be ready to regulate their own emotions, show empathy to others and have more confidence and they will know they and all humans matter!
5th Grade parents:
Please continue to watch out for information on middle school. Elective sheets will be coming home March 5th for the campus that your child is zoned to for the 19-20 school year. Attached are flyers for upcoming Transition Meetings for Cook Middle School and Campbell Middle School. Please attend to find out more information on the electives.

Grade Level News
Pre-Kindergarten
Our Pre-kinder students had an amazing time watching and listening to Mother Goose present all of her nursery rhymes. In language arts, we are continuing to work with letter sounds by identifying, saying and blending them to make words. In writing, we are focusing on staying on topic and using letters to make words. In mathematics, we are continuing to work on counting to 20 and ordinal number of 1st through 5th. We are working on using location words such as over, under, above, on, beside, behind, in front of inside. Thank you to all of the parents who sent coins for our Pennies for Patients Fundraiser and those who came to PK Night to help support your student’s learning at home!
Kindergarten
Kindergarten had such a fun time during field day. We thank the volunteers, the parents, and Gleason staff for all the support during field day. In reading, we have been learning about the story elements of our books such as: recognize the setting, main characters, the actions of characters, & thoughts of our characters. In writing, we are beginning to write how to stories. We will learn how to write a story step by step. As writers, we are still working on the conventions of writing such as having capital letters at the beginning of our sentence, spell our high frequency words correctly, and punctuation at the end of our sentences. In math, we will be identifying money (penny, nickel, dime, & quarter). We are still reviewing the following math skills: measurement, counting to 100, more and fewer, making combinations up to 10, and counting forward and backward from 1 to 20. Please remember to send a healthy snack and water bottle with your child daily. Thank you!
First Grade

In reading we will researching non-fiction topics individually and in groups. Students will put together a project and present their research to share with their peers what they discovered.
In writing we will be finishing up our All About books. The students have chosen a topic and have carefully planned and organized the chapters of their All About book. The students will use a multitude of graphic organizers and different forms of writing paper. We will also be starting our Poetry unit towards the end of March.
