Message from Chris

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The beautiful weather has continued this week, and we hope it will hold for our Year 5 children who are on Lantau at the moment for their three day camp.

We hope our families who were celebrating the Festival of Light over the weekend had a very happy Diwali. It was wonderful to see so many children wearing traditional Diwali themed clothing on Friday. We know the children had a fantastic time during the Redress day on Friday, raising awareness about the challenges presented by the textile industry. This was a really successful day. Our clothes collection boxes have been a huge success and have been overflowing with donations for the past week.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to the Year 3 parents for arranging a spooky Halloween spectacular of a cake sale last Friday. The team raised nearly $14,000 in less than an hour! A real achievement. It was great to see the variety of exciting activities and cakes on offer. Thanks again to Year 3 parents for their fabulous efforts!

As mentioned previously, the Year 5 children are away on camp this week, with Year 6 children away early next week. We wish all the children and staff an exciting, brilliant camp experience. Our camps are a great opportunity for children to be challenged, demonstrate their team working skills and really excel in areas of the curriculum which they don’t often face.

Best Regards,

How can I help?

Volunteer – we need help to set-up and run the games and stalls on the night of the Fair. Please sign up using the Google Form here.

Volunteer your teenager – if you have older students at home, we’d love to have them come and help out on our games stalls.

Donate – time for a clear-out! The week of the Fair we will be collecting for:

  • Second Hand Book Stall - Second hand books for Adults and Children are welcome (please no VCR tapes, CD’s or DVD’s).

  • Pre-loved Accessories Stall - Our Pre-loved Accessories Stall is back looking for gently used, pre-loved handbags, scarves, sunglasses, belts & jewellery – nothing high value, but good condition, costume accessories welcome.

  • School Uniform – This year the Fair will see the addition of a gently used uniform stall. We welcome your donations of gently used school uniform for resale at the fair.

  • Water or wine - A new Adult only game for this years fair. We are asking for donations of new bottles of wine, champagne, olive oil, juice, cordial, vinegar, Perrier etc. All bottles must be in date and placed in an open wine bag. The game works in a similar way to a lucky dip. Everyone's a winner but who knows what you will get.

All donations can be left at the Glenealy Money Sales Stand in the playground the mornings and afternoons the week of the Fair.

Making our Fair more sustainable

  • This year to continue our commitment to going green we will be using Vegware which is plant based compostable packaging for disposables. These are made from plants using renewable and lower carbon materials making it compostable with food waste.

  • Please bring your own storage containers to take delicious treats home from our food stalls. We will be providing water free of charge but please bring your own cups.

Year 3 Fundraiser

Year 3 hosted a hugely successful Halloween themed Bake Sale last Friday. There were delicious treats and a variety of games that the children hugely enjoyed. The Bake Sale raised $13,864 which will go towards the playground renovation. Thank you and well done Year 3.

News from the P.E. Dept

Eight of our Year 5 and 6 girls, along with Mrs. Matthews, were part of history on the morning of Saturday 26th October. They travelled up to Peak School, joining five other schools, to be part of the first-ever girls' football team to represent Glenealy.

The girls showed fantastic levels of skill, commitment, and enthusiasm throughout the morning, scoring four goals in total and earning a well-deserved draw in the final game of the day. There was also some very brave and agile goalkeeping on display.

We would like to thank all the parents that provided their support and look forward to building on the strong foundations that have been set by this group of girls. Well done!

School Uniform

As the weather is now starting to turn cooler, students may want to wear trousers, grey knit sweaters, fleeces or windbreakers. Please visit the school website for links to the Glenealy uniform supplier to ensure that students are compliant within the guidelines.

Thank you to everyone for helping with keeping our students looking very smart.

Box of Hope

Big picture

All students should have received their stickers for Box of Hope last week. Please check with your child that they have received this label.

The Year 6 Events Team students will set up tables in the playground on the mornings of Monday November 11th and Tuesday November 12th.

Completed boxes may be dropped off here before the start of school on these days.

Please do not bring in any boxes before these dates as we do not have space to store them in the school.

The Box of Hope is an annual charity project aimed at providing useful/educational gifts to underprivileged children in Hong Kong & Asia. Glenealy School has been supporting this charity for some years now, helping to bring a big smile to the children's faces. What you have to do is fill a shoe box with some thoughtful gifts and then wrap it with some colourful or nice paper.

To find our more about Box of Hope and to gain some ideas about what to put in your box you may check out this video:

If you need more information, please go to the Box Of Hope website here

Redress Day

Did you know?

- It takes 10m squared of land and 29, 121 litres of water to make one pair of jeans

- Globally one garbage truck of textiles goes to a landfill every second

- Polyester clothes can take up to 200 years to decompose in a landfill

- Fashion is the second biggest polluter of clean water in the world after agriculture

- 95% of textiles that are thrown away could be reused, repaired or recycled

Thank you!

Thank you so much for supporting our Glenealy community and the local HK charity Redress. With your help and clothes donations, we initially filled the four boxes that Redress sent us and we had to ask Redress to send us more boxes to fill! Your action has meant that these clothes will be reused and saved from a landfill.

Thank you for making a green positive difference,

Green Team
