Principal Newsletter
From the Desk of Mrs. Riley
May 14, 2020
Dear Parents,
This week, the newsletter contains some very important information in regards to report card grades and drop off/pick up of end of school year items. Please read carefully the following points below and do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
- Students will receive a grade for the third trimester and a final grade. The teachers and I, along with consultation from the Office of Catholic Education, have worked on appropriate practices for grading in a flexible learning environment and have slightly adjusted the final year calculation. Since flexible learning is more of a challenge for many students for a variety of reasons, we did not want this marking period to have a harmful impact on students. However, we realize that most of our students have really tried during this period so we have built what we believe to be a fair system reflective of both. The final trimester will be weighted differently to reflect the shorter time in the final trimester and to accentuate the work already completed in the first and second trimesters. Therefore, the first and second trimesters will be weighed as 36% of the final grade and the third trimester will be 28% of the final grade.
- There will be no school on Friday, May 22nd and Monday, May 25th for the Memorial Day holiday.
- Direct instruction will end on Friday, May 29th. Please continue to mark attendance up until that last day.
- Our drop off/pick up days will be Wednesday, June 3rd for Grades Pre-K and K, Thursday, June 4th for Grades 1-4 and Friday, June 5th for Grades 5-8. If you have multiple children, you may choose one day. On these days, teachers will not be present. I am also asking that no students be brought to school. A sign up genius will be released next week to sign up for a time. Parents will be entering a specific entrance and will not be permitted to go to classrooms. Tables will be set up for drop off items. Student belongings will be packed up, labeled and available on tables, along with envelopes containing report cards, etc.
- The 8th grade students do not need to return their chromebooks. They are theirs to keep. However, on June 5th, their OLGC email addresses and school account will both be turned off.
- A separate communication will be sent to discuss any activities related to graduation of our 8th grade class.
Through your efforts and the efforts of our teachers, we were able to accomplish a great deal of learning. I again thank all of you for your support during this crisis!
Thank you for your constant support and prayers for our school. I encourage you to continue to support our work as we advance our mission to provide a transformative education steeped in academics and faith to our deserving students. There is no greater investment for forming our future saints than a Catholic education!
Please carefully review this week's newsletter for many reminders and updates. We thank you for entrusting your children to us and for the sacrifices you make each day to send your child(ren) to Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic School.
God’s Peace,
Mrs. Barbara Riley

Social Events Chairperson: 2020-2021 School Year
As we begin to prepare for the 2020-2021 academic year, OLGC School is looking for a parent volunteer chairperson (or two co-chairpeople) to oversee the coordination of 6 - 8 social events that happen throughout the school year.
Responsibilities include:
- Attending annual parish calendar meeting to secure dates/times for events for the following school year
- Creating a social events reference sheet that outlines basic details, dates/times for the upcoming school year (template provided)
- Helping to secure 3 - 5 parent volunteers for each event (via Signup Genius)
- Supporting parent social event volunteers by serving as a resource, as follows:
- Providing reference information from previous year event organizers
- Communicating with school Marketing Director for Principal Newsletter promotions
- Interfacing with P.I.E. to provide receipts and reimbursements as needed
- Outlining ongoing process for parents to sign up to volunteer for events, solicit feedback and ideas on social events
Social events are a critical piece to the family atmosphere at OLGC, providing fun ways to build school camaraderie and enable new families to get to know one another. The social events committee chairperson serves an important role in providing the resources and information needed to engage parents in volunteer opportunities and maintain a vibrant and fun school community.
This position is a great fit for an outgoing, organized and friendly individual who enjoys interacting with others and coordinating details. Interested parents, please email Mrs. Barbara Riley at briley@olgc.org.

Parent volunteers needed for school social events!!!
We're attempting to plan out the 2020-21 school calendar in the hopes of a "business as usual" scenario. As part of the process, we've laid out dates for next year's school social events, some of which parent volunteers are needed.
The Signup Genius below outlines those events in need of volunteers - please review and consider signing up to help, as any events with zero volunteers may unfortunately be removed from the calendar. More information on the school calendar and individual events will be provided to volunteers as it becomes available.Thank you!
