Lenski Weekly Update

October 7, 2022

From the Principal's Desk

We had another great week at Lenski! We started the week with our first all-school PBiS assembly! We learned about assembly behavior, celebrated perfect attendance and our STARS of the week this year, and learned about our Lenski School song! We wanted to share it with you all:

We also celebrate our amazing Classified Staff this week with words of affirmation and little treats to show them how much we appreciate what they do for our students here at Lenski.

Halloween Plans:

We are looking forward to celebrating Halloween at Lenski!

October 28th: We will host a Trunk-Or-Treat from 4pm to 5pm at school. Room parents will work with classroom teachers to decorate each trunk. We will have live music too!

October 31st: While it is a normal school day for us, our classroom teachers will engage students throughout the day with fall-related activities. At about 1:45, we will begin our school-wide parade that will begin inside our building and end by looping outside of our school. Families are invited to come and support our students by being spectators outside of the building. Please plan for the weather. When you and your kiddos are planning a costume for the year, please remember that no face paint or facsimile of weapons or inappropriate scary masks will not be allowed.

Thanksgiving Lunch at Lenski Save the Date: We are excited to host a Thanksgiving lunch on November 10th during your child’s lunchtime. Stay tuned for more information!

Veteran’s Day: We are excited to host a breakfast at Lenski for our Veterans on November 11th! Please complete this Veteran's Day Form to let us know if you’d like to participate in our Veteran’s Day celebration!

Happy Birthday Lois Lenski!

Lois Lenore Lenski Covey (October 14, 1893 – September 11, 1974) was a Newbery Medal-winning author and illustrator of picture books and children's literature. Beginning with the release in 1927 of her first books, Skipping Village and Jack Horner's Pie: A Book of Nursery Rhymes, Lenski published 98 books. Her work includes children's picture books and illustrated chapter books, songbooks, poetry, and short stories. Her best-known bodies of work include the "Mr. Small" series of picture books (1934–62); her "Historical" series of novels, including the Newbery Honor-winning titles Phebe Fairchild: Her Book (1936) and Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison (1941); and her "Regional" series, including Newbery Medal-winning Strawberry Girl (1945) and Children's Book Award-winning Judy's Journey (1947).

Lenski also provided illustrations for books by other authors, including the first edition of The Little Engine that Could by Watty Piper (1930), and the first four volumes of Maud Hart Lovelace's Betsy-Tacy series (1940-1943).

Community Circles at Lenski

One way we are building a supportive Lenski community this year is by doing Community Circles in classrooms. Teachers may gather their students together to talk about how they are feeling, build connections, and address classroom concerns. Mrs. Ritchey and Ms. Nixon will be facilitating classroom Community Circles, as well.

What are community circles?

Community Circles are simply that - a circle that includes students, teachers, staff or anyone that is involved in a classroom. Everyone gathers in a circle and then the facilitator welcomes everyone and begins the process. Students will be given a prompt: they may be asked to share how they are feeling, answer a question, share an appreciation, or a concern. Children learn valuable listening and communication skills during circles. It is also an opportunity for all students to be heard. Teachers and staff learn more about their students’ needs, as well. Children are never required to share - they may pass if they feel uncomfortable or do not wish to share. Everyone is involved and respected.

We look forward to working with the students and learning more about them! If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to either one of us.
