Curriculum Corner! From Dr. Davis
Curriculum Corner
We are excited to begin the work of prioritizing standards on our DCD day Friday! The Curriculum Team representatives will be provided with a protocol for your team to follow and some supporting resources to help you evaluate your standards. This excerpt from “Tips from Dr. Marzano” can help you begin thinking about your grade level and what the priority standards could be.
Prioritized standards clearly articulate which skills and what content each student should master in each grade level.
Prioritized standards are learning goals that have been identified as most essential to a particular grade level, content area, or course. Ideally, teachers at the school or district level collaborate to determine which standards to prioritize. These standards should contain procedural knowledge, which includes skills, strategies, and processes, as well as declarative knowledge, which is fact-based, informational knowledge. Research shows that the more specific these prioritized standards are, the more effective they are at influencing student performance.
Prioritized standards can be determined using five criteria.
The following five criteria should be taken into account when school leaders determine which standards to prioritize:
- Endurance—Knowledge and skills that will last beyond a class period or course
- Leverage—Knowledge and skills that cross over into many domains of learning
- Readiness—Knowledge and skills important to subsequent content or courses
- Teacher Judgment—Knowledge of content area and ability to identify more- and less-important content
- Assessment—Student opportunity to learn content that will be assessed
By using these criteria, schools can identify essential knowledge and content that every student should learn.
