Stay safe, Be well & Take care
Dear Oakley Park Families,
On behalf of the entire Oakley Park staff, we wish you a restful Spring Break! We are so thankful for your continued support and diligence as we work daily to stay as healthy as possible at Oakley Park. While quarantining is NOT required after travel (neither Domestic or International) we trust that if your child is exhibiting any COVID 19 symptoms as we return to school on Monday, April 5th, you will error on the side of caution, keeping your child home to evaluate for the worsening of symptoms.
As we head into Spring Break both Hickory Woods Elementary and Keith Elementary were closed as a result of positive COVID cases and close contacts. With the recent increase in COVID cases, "we are asking everyone to take all precautions to stay safe so we can all return to school on April 5 to continue our learning in a safe environment. Our goal is to keep our schools and sports programs open. We do NOT want to have to shut down after spring break, especially with Spring Sports kicking off, as well as PSAT, SAT, and AP testing. To that end, we ask that all students and families do their best to follow CDC guidelines while on spring break." (taken from the District Update to Families).
Please refer to the COVID screener below to determine if you child or members of your household are exhibiting symptoms of concern.
Sincerely,
Kristin Froning
Report Card Reminder
Report cards will be available to view this evening (Friday, March 26) . Thank you for your patience with the release date change. As shared earlier this week, due to the recent switch of our elementary students to in-person learning on March 15, and the complications surrounding ensuring accuracy on the report card, the original date of Wednesday, March 24, needed to be changed. As you review your child’s report card, please note that some report cards have a FAPES (art, music, PE) teacher name that may be different from the student's second trimester FAPES teachers. In some instances, this was an error in the system that could not be rectified. With that said, please know that the grade is accurate, even if the teacher name is not the correct second trimester teacher. If you have any questions or concerns, about grades, please contact the teacher directly.
Math Course Skipping Information
Dear Families,
Our current math standards are more rigorous and demanding than ever. Students
are expected to develop a deep understanding of concepts leading to fluency with facts and
procedures, and the ability to clearly communicate their mathematical thinking. Further,
students must pass a demanding sequence of high school math courses in order to meet
graduation requirements. In response to the increased expectations for all students, we have
adjusted the content focus and instructional approaches in all of our math courses.
Because of the higher standards and to ensure student success at all points of their
mathematical education, we are using the procedures described below to accelerate students.
In order to skip a course in the math sequence, students must demonstrate proficiency in the content and skills of the course they are attempting to skip. The process and procedures described below apply to all students currently in grades 2 through 7. Students attempting to test-out of high school courses will use the existing process described on the high school websites. Parents of students in kindergarten or first grade who have indications their child is possibly ready to skip a year of Math should contact their building principal.
If you have questions after reviewing the process, please contact your building principal or me.
Thank you for your partnership in education.
Sincerely,
John M. Gregg
Math/Science Coordinator
Overview of Math Course-Skipping Process
Considerations and Suggested Criteria for Testing
To avoid student frustration, thoughtful consideration should come before registering students for above grade-level Math testing. High-levels of success in the current Math course, while important, is not the primary indicator of students successful with Math course-skipping tests.
Our data shows that students who are successful in skipping an entire year of Math typically
spend extra time outside the school day engaged in Mathematical exercises; either with online courses, after-school programs, or with tutors knowledgeable about the grade-level standards and progressions.
Before pursuing the opportunity to test-out of a course, it is recommended students should
achieve above grade-level proficiency from current year i-Ready diagnostic tests.
Test Structure
There are two parts to the test. Students must pass Part 1 and Part 2 with at least 80% correct on each part. Test results are shared via the email families provide.
Testing Location and Dates--Part 1
Due to the social distancing resulting from COVID-19 tests will be remote and online. This
means your student will take Part 1 remotely with online supervision on one of the following
dates and times. Current Middle School students (grades 6 and 7) from 2:45 to 4:00PM.
Current Elementary students (grade 2 through 5) from 4:45 to 6:00PM.
Required Registration-Part 1 Test
To ensure we can accommodate your student’s application, parents must sign-up no later
than Thursday, April 29th. Registration will open the week of April 5th.
Online registration is preferred. Please use this link: https://forms.gle/UzuaVDrYNdPaZJCs7
If you are unable to access the online form, use a paper copy of the application available in
your building’s office beginning April 5th. Students must register in advance to participate.
Results from Part 1
Parents will receive results from Part 1 of the test by MAY 28th via email. Students who earn
80% correct or higher on Part 1 of the test are eligible to register to take Part 2. Registration
for Part 2 will be managed through an emailed invitation.
Testing Location and Dates--Part 2
This test is given in-person at the Educational Services Center (district offices) afterschool by appointment on JUNE 8th, 9th, or 10th.
Required Criteria
Students must pass both parts of the opt-out test for the course they are attempting to skip,
with at least 80% correct on each part.
Students New to the District
If interested, newly enrolled students may make arrangements to take the opt-out tests after
registration. Interested families should contact EllenMcDonald@wlcsd.org.

From the MDE:
Michigan’s request to the U.S. Department of Education (USED) to waive the administration of Spring 2021 state summative assessments and associated high-stakes school accountability requirements, remains pending. As such, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) continues to prepare for spring testing in the event that the assessment waiver request is not approved by the U.S. Department of Education. To provide more flexibility in the event that USED requires the state to administer state summative assessments this year, MDE is extending both M-STEP testing windows to allow districts and schools additional time to administer the state assessments. The first M-STEP window for grades 5, 8, and 11 is being extended to May 21, 2021. The second M-STEP window for grades 3, 4, 6, and 7 and the MI-Access window are being extended to June 4, 2021.
2021-2022 School Year
Planning for the 2021-22 school year is happening on many levels. It is our full intention to offer five days of in-person instruction for all students in the fall. Administrators are meeting and working on determining a virtual option that would continue into next year for those who choose it. All of this, of course, is predicated on a number of factors of which we have no control: the virus, the success/impact of vaccines on our schools/community, MDHHS orders, recommendations from the Governor’s Advisory Council, CDC recommendations and guidance, and our 2021-2022 budget from the State.
CALENDAR FOR THE 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR:
We are working on the 2021-22 school year calendar, although is a negotiated item and we do not anticipate having a final calendar until late in the spring.
Crossing Guard
Our school liaison officer, Deputy Nick Krafft continues to work to ensure we have a deputy at the walk each day. We will NEVER release our walkers until we know someone (a deputy, Mrs. Froning or a staff member is at the street). We urge those of you who sign out your child to walk them home to WAIT until someone can assist with your crossing.
If you or someone you know is interested apply for our Crossing Guard position, please contact Mrs. Froning.
