DES Principal's Newsletter

January Edition

The latest and greatest as we enter the New Year!

Dear DES Families,

We hope everyone had a restful and rejuvenating holiday break! We are looking forward to embarking on this New Year with you...Welcome 2022! A New Year is always a nice time for reflection, and with that we will be taking this time to once again look at our goals, determine where we are at, and make necessary adjustments. It's also a nice time to look at establishing new goals, and setting and/or sticking to healthy routines.

One exciting new focus we will be exploring in the second part of this school year is the "Caring School Community" framework and materials that we were able to secure through grant funding. This is a social emotional learning (SEL) and discipline program, which we will use as a supplement, is offered through the Center for the Collaborative Classroom. This program is designed to help students become caring, responsible members of their school communities and, ultimately, grow into humane, principled and skilled citizens of a democratic society. Ultimately we hope to have all students be able to have self-discipline- that is, the ability to regulate their own emotions, understand and relate to the feelings of others, and act independently and skillfully on responsible decisions they make about their own behavior. Exciting stuff....right?!!

We also hope you enjoy our NEW platform for School Newsletters, we are grateful to our Central Office TEAM for securing a subscription to SMORE so that we can provide you more digitally interactive newsletters moving forward. Feel free to let us know if like the new format and what you'd like to see more of in our newsletters...we love feedback!

With Well Wishes for a Prosperous NEW YEAR!

Project Based Learning (PBL) Project Showcase

Our Second Grade students learned about an animal that had bioluminescence, mimicry, or camouflage. They used this information to create a Google Slide. Students had to use all writing & technology skills learned to this point to create their slides.

After all students finished their slides, they had a museum walk, where students had the ability to look at what other students did, offer feedback and be able to learn about other animals they didn’t do their research on. Once again students were focused and worked their hardest knowing they were writing for a purpose and they had a real authenic audience.
