From the Principal
Happy Friday! Thank you to everyone who attended the IB/Golden Awards Assembly and Pastries with the Principal on Wednesday. We had a wonderful turnout for both and will continue to host “Pastries with the Principal” after each IB assembly. We invite our Skyline community to attend along with our individual IB trait student winners and their families. It was awesome to hear from the IB Open-Minded student winners.
Tuesday's Staff Meeting was hosted in Amy Tilt's Room, beginning with a Teacher Trick shared by Mrs. Tilt. Thanks, Mrs. Tilt! Thank you to Samantha Freeman for providing us with yummy snacks. We appreciate you!
This week during our staff meeting we worked on Back to School Night preparations. Teachers also worked collaboratively on their current PYP/MYP Unit Planners. It was a great opportunity for teachers to listen to what is happening in each other’s class as well as share ideas on curriculum and assessments.
We continued with our PLC’s (Professional Learning Committees) with all of our amazing PLC groups. This week specialists collaborated around their yearly goals. Some of the conversations in the weekly PLC’s have been around writing goals together. This would allow teachers to have common data to look at as well as resources, interventions, and extension supports in their classrooms. Our specialists talked about what goals they all wanted to write and see if there were any common practices that they can all share. One of their common practices centered around writing Middle School IB Planners. Our other focus was identifying planners that needed to be written at the Middle School level and understanding more of the components of the information needed in them.
On Thursday and Friday during PLC’s, Kim Sammons and Jet Griffith shared out what they learned at the two-day Health Training as our K-5 Health Leads. The two-day institute included training on Teaching skills-based Health Education to elementary students, best practices in Health Education and Oregon Health Education Standards review. It also included planning time and collaboration partnering with community organizations to support health education in schools for elementary students Erin's Law for K-5.
Skyline K-8 has a team of six staff members; Bianca Arias, Julie Melton, Melissa Dunn, Allie Penix, Melody Hiser and BG Aguirre attending the PPS MTSS Coaching Academy on October 24th and 25th. To learn more about MTSS, please check out the MTSS district website https://www.pps.net/domain/5007.
We would love to continue having volunteers during K-2 lunch/recess from 11:00 a.m. - 11:40 a.m. Miss Debbi has a sign-up sheet in the main office with opportunities through December. Please contact her if you're interested in volunteering. Thank you in advance.
Our PBIS/Climate Committee is looking for one more parent to join the team for meetings from 7:45 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. on October 30, December 18, January 29, February 26, April 29 and May 27. If you are interested in being on the committee, please email Miss Allie at apenix@pps.net.
Back-to-School Night is coming up next week on October 3, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. We will start in the gym and 6:00 p.m. and then visit teachers in their classrooms. Miss Debbi made passports for the students to take around and get stamped/ initialed by their teachers! Thank you, Miss Debbi. We are excited about the annual event!
Site Council elections will take place in the library on Back to School Night for our 3rd and 4th parent spot. The Skyline K-8 School Site Council is comprised of parents, teachers, classified staff, and administration. Representation is by-election from the represented body. The Site Council will meet a minimum of four times per year and are tasked with reviewing school success data and providing direct input/review to the SCIP - School Improvement Plan! Please let Melissa Dunn know if you are interested in running for Site Council. Her email is mdunn2@pps.net. Thank you to Sarah Coleman and Shannon Garcia-Shinn for serving on-site council. Our first site council meeting is October 16 at 3:30 p.m.
If you are not following us on Twitter @BGAGUIRRE1 and @skyline_ib, you are missing out! It has been so much fun watching all of our students engaged in learning while also being safe, respectful, responsible and IB ready.
All the best,
Mrs. Aguirre

The pumpkins are here!! It's time for the first-ever Skyline Storybook Pumpkin Parade. Any student, K-8, is invited to participate. Just think of your favorite BOOK character and create the main character on a pumpkin. Pumpkins must not be carved or punctured (due to mold and small critters) or a fake pumpkin can be used.
The attached letter will go home in today's Community Newsletter and hard copies will be available next week in the library for students.

Backpack Program
Hello Skyline Families –
Our wonderful school has an important program that helps fellow Skyline families that are in need of grocery help.
Usually, we get our food for the Backpack program from Sunshine Pantry in Beaverton. Sadly, they are in the midst of moving facilities and cannot help us right now.
I am asking that you, our awesome families, help us out until we can resume our regular food pick up.
I ask that you drop non-perishables at the school near the office. We are looking for pasta, sauce, fruit cups or squeezes, cereals, beans, veggies, canned meats. Anything your family would consume can be donated. Remember shelf-stable foods only.
Thank you,
Liz Ascher

Coding with Kids
Dear Parents,
Please note that the starting date for the Coding with Kids class at your child's school has been postponed by two weeks (see new date above). Currently, there are not enough students to conduct the class. We will be doing more active outreach with the school and the school district to ensure the minimum number of students is met.
In the interim, please share our coding opportunity and this registration link with your child's friends. It would be more fun for your child if his/her friends join, and that will help ensure the class runs as scheduled!
Once the class starts, you will receive a $20 refund to your credit card since we are reducing the number of classes from 8 to 7 weeks. In the unlikely event that the class is unable to run, we will provide you with a full refund.
We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience but look forward to welcoming your child in a couple of weeks!
Best,
Sunshine Navarro Shively
