Elk Powerlifting
Burleson powerlifting traveled across town Thursday and thanks to five first-place finishes won the Centennial Invitational.
The Elks scored 45 points to take first place. Centennial was sixth with eight points. Midlothian finished second (34 points) and Crowley was third (22).
Burleson picked up first-place finishes from Justin Moss, Adrien Moreno, Ethan Brown, Trenton Blew and Caleb Banks.
In the 114-pound class, Moss won with a combined weight of 660 pounds and Matthew Smith was second (575 combined pounds). Moreno took first-place at 132 pounds with a combined weight of 770 pounds.
At 165 pounds, Brown was first with a combined weight of 925 pounds. Gabe Fuentes was second (895 combined pounds), Ethan McBrayer was third (890) and Ethan Hernandez was fifth (775).
Blew won the 220-pound class with a combined weight of 1,070. Andrew Freese was third (985 combined pounds and River Hagin was fourth (935).
At 242 pounds, Banks took first place with 1,250 combined pound and Harlen Perkins was third (1,025 combined pounds).
Elk and Lady Elk
Swimming Friday at the District 7-5A championships, Burleson boys and girls teams turned in strong efforts.
The Elks scored 98 points to finished second behind district champion Granbury (199 points). Cleburne was third with 60 points. The Lady Elks placed fifth with 47 points. Granbury took the girls title with 155.5 points. Cleburne was second (98 points) and Centennial was third (77).
“I’m super proud of my swimmers for the effort and hard work they have put into their season this year,” Burleson coach Heidi Martin said. “Over half of our whole team has qualified for regionals this year. They are definitely a dedicated group of kids and it shows.”
To qualify for the regional meet, an individual or relay team had to finish in the top six at the event held at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium.
The Class 5A Region 2 Championships will take place Feb. 1-2 at the same location as the district championships.
The Elks qualified eight individuals in seven events and a pair of relay teams.
Senior James Miller finished second in two events. Miller placed second in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 58.05 seconds and was second in the 100 backstroke in a time of 57.07. Sophomore Jacob Coursey was third in the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:01.49. In the 200 individual medley, Coursey placed third in a time of 2:12.81. Senior Nick Kostulas was fifth in a time of 2:32.85 and freshman Tristan Farley was sixth in a time of 2:55.70.
Junior Gabriel Bustillos finished third in the 100 freestyle in a time of 53.89. Bustillos also placed third in the 50 freestyle in a time of 23.85 and Tanner Corn was fourth in the event in a time of 24.42.
In the 100 breaststroke, Kostulas placed third in a time of 1:08.62 and senior Aaron Jacobs was fifth in a time of 1:13.86. Freshman Liam Waks placed sixth in the 500 freestyle in a time of 6:53.82.
The team of Miller, Corn, Coursey and Bustillos finished second in the 200 freestyle relay in time of 1:35.77 and set a school record in the event along the way. The 200 medley relay team of Miller, Kostulas, Bustillos and Corn placed second in a time of 1:47.94.
The Lady Elks qualified two individuals in four events and a pair of relay teams for regionals.
Junior Aaliyah Young won the 100 freestyle in a time of 56.85 and finished third in the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:05.86. Senior Amelia Flug placed third in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:06.40 and was fourth in the 50 freestyle in a time of 27.27.
Burleson’s 200 medley relay team of junior Zeijne Waks, Young, Flug and senior Lexi Melia finished fourth in a time of 2:08.26. The team of Flug, sophomore Kendall Kirk, Melia and Young placed fourth in a time of 1:56.52.
BHS Band
BHS Student Earns All-State Honors
Noah Teer, sophomore trumpet player in the Burleson High School Wind Ensemble, was selected for the 2019 Texas Music Educators Association 5A All-State Band during Area B Auditions Saturday, January 12th at Coppell HS.
He is one of only twenty-one 5A trumpet students state-wide selected for this honor. Teer will face the other twenty all-state trumpet students during auditions to be held on February 13th in San Antonio for chair placement. Thereafter, he will rehearse with the All-State Band for three days as they prepare their performance to be premiered on Saturday, February 16th in Lila Cockrell Theater of the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center. This is Teer’s second time to be selected for All-State.
He studies privately with Angela Gipson Rimbach of Crowley.

Burleson ISD & Burleson Nissan/Honda are giving away another car this school year. Here's how you can win a Nissan Sentra:
*Students must be enrolled in the Burleson ISD for the entire 6-weeks grading period.
*Students may earn 1 ticket per six weeks for perfect attendance.
*Students may earn 4 BONUS tickets per semester for perfect attendance (Fall & Spring).
*Students may earn 10 BONUS tickets for the year for perfect attendance.
*Students may earn a maximum of 24 tickets per school year.
The Nissan Sentra will be given away during halftime of the annual BHS PowderPuff football game in May, 2019.
