CAFE Updates
5th Grade Updates
January 2019
What's happening in the CAFE?
Academics
We have completed our first round of book clubs. The students did a good job of having deep-level conversations about their literature and started to work on analytical and critical thinking in their write-longs. For the rest of quarter 2, we will continue to practice this deep thinking in our write-longs on our independent reading books.
Writer's Workshop
The students worked hard on their narrative pieces before break. We will continue to dig a little deeper into narrative writing and add more tools to our writing "tool-box".
Math
We have started our fraction unit. Students will be learning about percent equivalents, comparing, ordering and taking a fraction of a number for the first part of the fraction unit. We will then move into adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers. Remember to have your child show you their PLP throughout the unit.
Social Studies
We are sailing off to the New World! The students are participating in a simulation where they are colonists. Once our ships land in the New World, we will be learning about the hardships of colonizing. The students will be writing journals in the voice of a colonist about our activities.
Extras
We will be doing our mid-year MAP testing on Thursday 1/10 (Reading) at 9:50 and Thursday 1/17 (Math) at 9:50. Please try to schedule appointments around these times.
