Student Standout January: Alex Proulx
Alex is a young, talented individual that is proud to be part of the Roadrunner Nation! If you had a conversation with his friends and asked them to describe Alex, they would describe him as kind, hardworking and a music fanatic. Alex is highly dedicated to music; so much that he is currently taking three music classes!
As many of you may relate, Alex has a difficult time concentrating and staying focused during class. However, what sets Alex apart from others is his determination to overcome every and any roadblock he comes across. While academic talent may come easy to others, Alex recognizes that he has to work twice, maybe even three times as hard than others to be successful in any subject. Furthermore, Alex struggles with anxiety, which makes it difficult to speak up in class, socialize with peers and share his talent publicly. Although, this challenge has not stopped him from standing out as a scholar. Currently, Alex is filming an audition tape of him playing the bassoon (buh·soon) for Irvine Valley College. Even though he is alone when recording, the thought of others viewing his tape makes him nervous. We applaud him for his efforts!
For the entirety of his career, Alex has been on the Honor Roll due to his phenomenal effort. He pushed himself out of his comfort zone and took on multiple Honors and AP classes. Although he pushes himself to earn good grades in academic courses, he recommends his peers to take advantage of the elective classes, specifically Marching Band. Over the years, Marching Band allowed Alex to develop meaningful and supportive connections with his peers. Being part of Band and its events made Alex feel, if not reinforced, his integral role as a Roadrunner. Saddleback events would definitely not be the same without the hype music in the background.
Alex is currently taking Marching Band, Jazz Band and Winter Drumline, which blatantly showcases his passion for music. One important skill he developed while taking these electives is confidence. More specifically, the confidence to perform in public as it makes him anxious at times. He also has an active role in Quizbowl. Currently, Alex is in the process of recruiting members for GSA here at Saddleback HS. He envisions GSA to provide a safe space where every student can freely express themselves without having fear of being judged.
Alex is not your typical leader: loud and seen. Rather, Alex is very lowkey and considers himself more as a support person. Need individual help? Alex is your person. As the drum captain in Marching Band, Alex has to set the example of how to act properly during practice and events. He makes himself available to answer any questions, and if he doesn't know the answer, he does not hesitate to connect with others.
Alex's Motivational Words
To his teachers, Alex would like to share the following: “Thank you Mr. Knight and Mr. Lozano for always being available to support me not only academically but also personally.” He is grateful for the opportunities he has had to develop his talents here at Saddleback. After all, we are available to support all of our Roadrunners! Alex looks forward to pursuing his dream of becoming a music teacher, whether it is in a traditional classroom or studio. He is more than eager to continue playing music in college.
