Dear Parents,

Most of us remember the events that took place on September 11, 2001. For me, it is a day that I will never forget. I remember exactly where I was, what I was doing, and who I was with. It was a day that has forever changed me. It was day that has forever changed our Nation. In the following days and weeks, I remembered a strong sense of UNITY in our Nation. People hung their flags. People went out of their way to be kind to one another. People came together and there was a strong belief that we were stronger together no matter our ethnicity, faith, viewpoints or interest.

President Barack Obama declared in his proclamation on September 11, 2016, that September 11, would be known as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. In his speech he stated, "We must ensure that darkness is no match for the light we shine by engaging in acts of service and charity. I invite all Americans to observe this day with compassionate and selfless deeds that embody the values that define our people, and to find opportunities to give back to their communities."

As a nation and as a community, we have faced much darkness in the last 19 months. From a national pandemic to social injustices, the darkness has surrounded us. Much like the aftermath of September 11, 2001, our Parsons' community has come together to shine the light during these tough times. We truly are #STRONGERTOGETHER and our unity continues to pave the way for our students' successes.

I hope you take time this weekend to pour into your children and model for them what it means to be unified by showing compassion for ALL and doing for others. Our lights together will surely mean a bright future for our students.

Your BEYOND proud principal,

Laura Clark

Digital Learning Day on September 14th

As a reminder, GCPS will hold its first Digital Learning Day (DLD) on Sept. 14th. GCPS has a total of six DLDs in the 2021-22 calendar: Sept. 14, Oct. 20, Nov. 9, Jan. 25, March 2, and March 22. Lunches will be distributed by bus routes on all digital learning days. Parents may also choose to pick up their child's lunch in curbside pick up at the front of the school between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM.

Students will log on to their teacher's eClass page for asynchronous lessons. If your child does not have access to a device or needs a hotspot to participate digitally on September 14th, please complete the form attached by September 10th. Mr. Berry, our local school TST, will notify parents via email when their device or hotspot is ready for pick up.

Asian American Action Fund Donates Books to Parsons

The Asian American Action Fund (AAAF) partnered with Parsons by donating a set of Korean language books. Students in Mrs. Im's first grade class accepted the donations and shared in a special read aloud of the donated book. The book entitled, "I Love You No Matter What" is written by Nury Crawford, a director in Gwinnett County Public Schools’ Community - Based Mentoring Program.

Michelle Kang, who serves as the Korean American Constituency Director of the Asian American Action Fund in Georgia, shares her group’s excitement about this initiative. Ms. Kang says, “Gwinnett County Public Schools serves a large Korean population. Our desire to donate books to schools that are written in Korean serves two primary purposes. First, it provides books in the home language of many GCPS students. Second, it allows others in the school to experience the Korean language, highlighting the Asian community and ensuring that children and others in the school community have opportunities to broaden their knowledge about the Asian community and its contributions.”

Headphones for computers

Please make sure that your child has headphones. Many of the programs that students use at school require headphones to hear the audio. You may send in your own wired headphones from home or you may purchase them on MyPaymentsPlus. If you purchase your own headphones and send them in, please label them with your child's first and last name. Thank you for helping our teachers by making sure that your child has a pair of headphones for the computer.

National Grandparents Day

On Sunday, September 12th, we get to celebrate grandparents. Grandparents pour so much into our children's lives and they deserve this national day of celebration. Some of my most favorite childhood memories were with my grandparents. Whether it was a special day at grandma's spa having my nails polished (before nail salons) or a fun sleepover filled with many games of 'Pick up Sticks'...my grandparents played a significant role in my life. I am sure this is true of your child's grandparents as well. So, be sure to make that special card, or call, letting them know how much they are loved and appreciated.

It’s More Than Meals…Complete meal application by Oct. 21 for added benefits

While breakfast and lunch will be provided at no charge for all GCPS in-person and digital students this school year, it still pays to complete the Free and Reduced-price Meal Application. Confirmed eligibility establishes a number of benefits for individual students such as free or discounted college-admissions tests, AP exams, and college applications, scholarship opportunities, and no- and low-cost access to technology and internet plans. In addition, the percentages of qualifying students at a school are used as a measure to secure additional federal funding (Title I) to support students and their education, promote family engagement, and provide additional technology and internet access. Title I funds pay for additional teachers, Parent Centers, additional learning opportunities for students, extra resources, added technology, and more. Click the link below or use the QR code to access the application.

Afternoon Transportation

All transportation changes must be made in writing. Whenever you need to make a change to your child's afternoon transportation plan, please complete an Afternoon Transportation Change Form in the front office no later than 12:00 PM the day of the change. We will utilize this form to create the appropriate afternoon transportation pass. Please remember the GCPS Bus Rule: no passes will be issued for play dates, birthdays, weekend sleepovers, etc. For security reasons, we DO NOT accept transportation changes through phone calls or emails.

Student Check Out

Anyone checking out a child must present photo identification and be listed in our system as someone able to have access to the student. If you need to make changes to your list of approved emergency contacts, you may make changes on the Parent Portal or stop by the office to update this information. As a reminder, students may NOT be checked out after 3:00 PM. For assistance in updating contact information on the parent portal, please visit https://www.gcpsk12.org/Page/11430.

PTA Happenings

Thank you to all the amazing families who donated to the Parsons PTA Fundraiser! It was an amazing success. I can announce that we hit our goal and all proposed programs are fully funded. Principal Clark WILL INDEED kiss a pig! Way to go Parsons!

We have lots of great PTA programs this week:

*Reflections Competition helps children think about "I Will Change the World By..." and express themselves with music, photography, dance, literature, art or film production. You can simply record a short video of your child, and submit it by e-mail to ParsonsESpta@gmail.com. Look for more details in your child's Friday Folder.

*Chick-Fil-A Spirit Day is Thursday, September 16, 2021 - All day, Dine-in, or Take out at the Chick-Fil-A at 2020 Satellite Blvd, Duluth, GA 30097. Mention Parsons Elementary while ordering and a portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit the Parsons PTA.

*Parsons PTA Meeting will be held in the PTA Trailer on Monday, September 13, 2021 at 2:00 PM both in-person and by zoom. This is our first time trying out a hybrid method, so please be patient as we work out the kinks. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83693824553?pwd=enl6ZW1pVEJzMVhONmhNS1pGbmFqUT09
