The Enterprise Transition Plan
A high impact seminar co-facilitated by Royal Roads University Associate Professor, Michael Thompson & Vern Fischer, Fischer Financial (FBAVI Member).
Learn about their three-step process that allows a business owner to develop an effective transition 'road map'.
Business owners today are facing unprecedented challenges as they contemplate their transition from an enterprise they founded to a financially rewarding exit with a proper succession plan in place.
A Strategic Approach to Successful Business Exits
There appears to be a critical window of time where the next generation of leaders/managers in the SME sector have to be identified and placed in order to succeed the wave of retiring business owners of the boomer generational cohort.
In 2012, the first wave of baby boomers turns 65 with the last wave reaching 65 in 2029. It is estimated that 800,000 + North American businesses will be sold during this 17 year window.
This raises a key question – will there be a progressive decrease in valuations (and earnings multiples) over time as the supply of companies for sale starts to exceed demand from potential buyers?
A recent study by CIBC World Markets (Globe and Mail November 2013) indicates that $1.9 trillion in business assets are poised to change hands over the next five years within Canada. Those companies employ 2 million people and account for a least 15% share of GDP. Yet, based on the CIBC survey, close to 60% of business owners, aged 55 to 64 have yet to discuss exit or succession plans.
