Peace, Passion, Purpose
The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.
Notes from Michelle
This weekend, we celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. There are many ways that you can show your child the importance of Dr. King's work. One suggestion is through this PBS link: https://www.pbs.org/parents/thrive/books-for-martin-luther-king-jr-day
You can read books on his life, watch a movie or video, look for ways to volunteer on Monday, or look for events being held in his honor.
COVID: As you can tell from the numerous emails sent this week, this semester is starting out very different from last fall. Within the 7 days we have been back on campus we have needed to notify families of approximately five positive covid cases. The entire first semester we only needed to send out four notifications. This demonstrates even on our small scale, the increase contagion of the cases currently. Please help the EPMS community stay safe by being mindful of activities and exposures outside of school as well. As a school we will be reviewing the updated protocol and we will send out information as we have it in that regard.
VACCINATION STATUS: Students who are fully vaccinated (this would include the booster for those who are eligible) have a much less restrictive protocol than students who are not vaccinated. For example, a vaccinated student who has been exposed at the lunch table, does not need to miss school unless they are exhibiting symptoms. Unvaccinated students in the same situation do need to miss school until they can be tested twice over a 10 day period. At the beginning of the school year we did not have vaccinated students and so this was not included in the guidance but this has been updated since we now have a large number of vaccinated students on campus. REMINDER: FULLY VACCINATED includes the booster for those who are eligible.
LEVELS OF NOTIFICATION: We understand that it can be confusing to receive the school wide emails. However, this is mandated. We must notify the entire community each time we are notified of a positive case. If your child’s classroom has a positive case, you will receive a second email that discusses CLOSE CONTACT FULLY MASKED. If your child was exposed at the lunch table, you will receive a third email for CLOSE CONTACT NON-MASKED. We understand that this can be confusing.
CONCERNS: We also understand that some of you, regardless, of vaccination status are concerned about the spread throughout the larger community as well as potential at school. We continue to ensure that classrooms have soap, paper towels, hand sanitizer, and extra masks and gloves as needed. We continue to have doors and windows open and air purifiers running. Students are wearing masks at all times except when at lunch. One option, if you are concerned, would be to allow your child to be at school for the larger part of the instructional day, and simply pick them up at lunch. That way, their time on campus would be completely masked. If you have questions, please feel free to email me.
QUESTIONS REGARDING PROCESS FOR YOUR CHILD: We ask that you email first with your questions in regards to the communication you receive from us. We are fielding many phones calls as you can imagine. We will do our best to respond quickly to the email. If you do call, you may have to leave a message and we will return your call as soon as possible.
