The Panama Canal
By Spencer Price
What is it?
When America or south America were shipping goods with other countries they would have to pass all the way around South America which would add a lot of time so they made a canal going through Panama and split North America from South America so boats don't have to go all the way around South America.
How it affected Panama
After that many boats could ship goods through their and panama could too which boosted their economy a lot because of the money they got from it. It costed A LOT to make it but they got a lot more money from it than when they made it. Their GDP - per capita is $20,300 (2014 est.) .
What the Canal does
How it works
They use big doors to trap water in or let it oust so when boats come they raise water so they can stay on it the lower it to the next level of water sortove like water stair steps
This is a picture of the steps
This is where they raise and lower the water to get to sea level because the hill goes higher than sea level but both sides are equal
My opinion on the Panama Canal
I think it was a great idea to make it because it would take so long to get around South America so they could get to the other side so it was very useful in terms of efficiency. It took 10 years and a lot of money to build it but after it was done they got way more than they spent on it and I have to say it was a very good idea.
