Mrs. Valentour's Mumblings
September 18th-22nd
No school Friday 22nd-Teacher's Institute Day!
Fundations-We had a fun time with Fundations this week! We looked at all the glued sounds -ang, -ing, -ong, -ung, -ank, -ink, -onk, -unk, -am, -an, and -all. We used talking chips and each table group member had two talking chips to think of a word family "word" for the particular glued sound their table group got. For example, table one got the glued sound -ink and thought of the words pink, sink, link, shrink, etc. But you could only put in your talking chip when you were ready to think of your word family word and talk. You cannot talk when someone else is taking a turn.
We also did a fun fluency activity on the passage, Skip is Sick. We visualized the passage and sketched out three paragraphs. Then, we got up and did a hand-up, pair-up and re-told the story through our visualizations.
Literacy- We have been learning about fiction vs. non-fiction. We learned the difference between the two types of books. We even glued in key details into our reading notebooks. We are also looking at fiction passages and how to go back in to passage and look for the answer. We have been highlighting (YES--using our highlighters) our evidence!
Math- We're continuing module 2 in Eureka! We are working hard on measuring with a centimeter ruler. We are also working on making a good estimate and then measuring with our ruler to see if we are close! We learned that an estimate is just a guess and we don't have to be perfect--just close!
Writer's Workshop- We continue to write like 2nd grade AUTHORS!! This week we have been putting feelings in our writing! We are not just telling our feelings but sharing our feelings! Instead of saying I was happy...we are saying, I was smiling! Or, I was jumping up and down with excitement!
Social Studies-We have changed our focus to famous women in history! We are learning all about Ruby Bridges, a famous African-American child who changed and integrated the school systems in America! She did it when she was just a first grader!
Second Step/SEL- We had a fun time with the activity we did on Monday! We even got to outside and do it!! We joined together in a circle and gave each and every classmate a compliment! It was called a compliment circle!! This fit in perfectly with our second-step and bucket-filling! We had to be a good listener, be respectful and fill someone's bucket, but it also filled up our bucket as we gave a nice complement to a friend and we also received one in return!
