November 3rd
vol. 9
Welcome to November
I hope that everyone is surviving the post-Halloween madness! Our students have continued to bring in their candy wrappers for a team recycling contest. Additionally, thank everyone who donated to the winter clothing drive. We held the drive yesterday after school, and we had both the largest turnout yet as well as the largest amount of items collected. Thank you, Summit! You are a fantastic community. As we embark on our Thanksgiving Food Drive, please consider donating the items seen below to feed over 60 families in our local community. Finally, thank everyone for their cooperation and understanding that dismissal was delayed during our Shelter in Place yesterday. As communicated, we had a student with a medical emergency, and we needed to clear the hallway for our EMT. I am pleased to report that our student is doing well, and all is good. Have a great weekend!
Reminders
School will be closed next week on the dates below:
Tuesday, November 7th
Thursday, November 9th
Friday, November 10th
Drop Off/Pick Up Changes
Student drop off/parking in the back of the building is no longer available for the duration of the construction project. There will be NO through traffic between Oakland and Maple behind the school and students will not be able to use the cafeteria to enter the building. Students should please enter the front entrances to the school.
For safety reasons, we remind parents that completing a u-turn in the middle of Oakland Pl is not permitted and we ask students to please use the crosswalk on the corner of Summit Ave and Oakland Pl to cross the street. Student safety is paramount. We understand the inconvenience this may cause, and appreciate your patience during this time. Please keep in the mind that additional time may be needed in order for students to attend homeroom on time.
Thanksgiving Food Drive
As we forge ahead to build a school community that embraces giving and empathy, we have organized a Thanksgiving Food Drive at the middle school. Beginning Monday, November 7th, students can bring boxes or canned dry/non-perishable items to fill Thanksgiving "baskets ." There will be a box outside each team's morning entrance door for students to drop off items before entering the building. If you are able, we hope that you will choose to donate. To ensure we have enough food to make a complete basket, we ask that you only contribute items corresponding to your child's team assignment. Items can include, but are not limited to, the following:
We are accepting donations from November 7 - November 17.
The collection bin is located at each team entrance door!
Canned Cranberry Sauce - 6A
Stuffing or Mashed Potatoes- 6B
Canned Vegetables- 6C
Boxed Mashed Potatoes-7A
Stuffing-7B
Packaged/ Canned Gravy-7C
Canned Fruit-8A
Dessert (Jello/puddings/bread mixes)-8B

Partnering with the LCJSMS PTO, we want to make this Thanksgiving Holiday a little brighter for some of the families within our community. We are also working with St. Teresa’s to ensure that all additional donations serve the community of Summit. Please consider donating to help generate support for this venture as we build community and celebrate all we are thankful for this Holiday Season!
Walkathon Fundraiser for DC Trip
The PTO is organizing a walkathon -- LCJSMS Walk for D.C. 2024 -- so that each 8th grader has an opportunity to raise money for their trip to Washington D.C. in May 2024. Any money raised by a student that exceeds the individual cost of the trip will be used to help fund the trip of other 8th grade students in need. The walkathon is scheduled to take place on the outdoor track during Physical Education classes on November 16 (with a rain date of November 17). Using the link below, each student can register for the walkathon and then ask family and friends for support by sharing that same link. Supporters can pledge a certain amount of money for every lap a student walks around the track or make a set donation. Please note that a student must register on the walkathon website BEFORE sharing the link so that family/friends can find the student's name on the website and connect their support to that student.

8th Grade DC Trip
As many know, our trip to Washington, D.C., was reinstated. As was communicated at the coffee, the cost of the trip has increased because of transportation and lodging. We are adjusting to make the trip more attainable for all our students. Our PTO parent community recently started a GoFundMe to help subsidize the cost of the trip. Please see the link below and consider sharing it with your families, friends, relatives, and loved ones. Thank you for your continued support.
Washington D.C Trip Dates:
Wednesday, May 29th- Thursday, May 30th.
8th Grade Community Service Opportunities- Supporting Civic Engagement In Summit
Women in the Workplace Interview Project
Ask a student to interview you about your work experience! The Women in the Workplace Interview project is a video compilation composed of students interviewing significant women in their lives. The project showcases women across various occupations and highlights their contributions. A video compilation of the interviews will be shown in an advisory lesson next year. While any student can submit an interview, eighth graders can earn up to three hours of community service. Students can learn more about the project and submit an interview using the Google Classroom code, jo3ifrx.
Deadline January 19, 2024
*more community service opportunities can be found in the daily announcements.
Student Identification Badges (Student IDs)
Our school district is placing a strong focus on school safety and security. As such, we are intensifying our focus on students wearing their student IDs at all times throughout the school day. Students who are not wearing their IDs could incur disciplinary consequences, after a certain number of infractions (3 or more per month). We would appreciate the support of our parent community in emphasizing that message at home.
Student Lateness to School
Our school district holds student attendance and timeliness to school as an utmost priority to ensure student academic success. Students with four (or more) tardies per month (regardless of reason) will be assigned a Central Detention. Students will be given additional detentions for subsequent tardy points (8, 12, 16). These totals will be run once per month at the end of the month. Central Detentions are held from 2:55-3:35 PM Tuesday through Thursday. Further, extended detentions (until 5 PM) will be assigned for students with chronic tardiness. Additionally, students may be excluded from school activities for chronic lateness. We know the traffic in this area is a challenge and we are appreciative of parent support in helping students to arrive on time to school each day!
