News from the Nurse
The MPSD School Nurse Team is always looking for ways to make a difference for our students.
After reviewing the data of the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey for Manitowoc County, we recognized that the amount of recreational screen time has dramatically increased for middle school students with a total of 62% of students reporting they spend over three hours a night using a screen for fun. This includes: video games, texting and social media, etc.
We know that many students get a personal phone as they enter middle school. We offered a survey to all in-person 6th grade middle school students (Washington and Wilson) to determine what their perceived screen time use is in a normal week. We will share the data over these next weeks. We will provide weekly lessons about screen use for our 6th graders during advisory the entire second quarter.
Our goal is to share information with our students and families in an effort to manage and maybe decrease screen time and improve overall health and well being.

Washington PACK Focus for November & December
Being a Champion at Washington looks like:
- Doing your best
- Asking for help
- Showing determination
- Having a positive mindset
Students will get raffle tickets for demonstrating these Champion behaviors. At the beginning of December, we will have an assembly where we will recognize students of the month for being Champions and we will choose raffle tickets so students can win prizes!
