STEAM Updates

Grade 5 VEXcode VR

Our STEAM class is finishing up the coding unit using the VEXcode VR website. The students were able to code a virtual robot to complete various challenges like navigating a maze, using a magnet to retrieve and deliver objects, as well as solving a secret message. The students are working hard to use their problem solving skills and growth mindsets in order to fix coding errors. Throughout this module, we emphasized different real world applications in order to make computer science come to life. We hope they enjoyed this unit and developed an interest in future coding opportunities available in middle school.

Grade 4 Earth: Human Impact and Natural Disasters

Our STEAM class is completing the Project Lead the Way module, Earth: Human Impact and Natural Disasters. In this module, students learned about the relationship between humans and the environment. We reflected on all of the different natural resources we use every day. The students learned ways to reduce their human impact on the environment and used the design process to create an upcycled project. We just finished researching different natural disasters and will begin to design an emergency preparedness kit to demonstrate their understanding of the challenges that natural disasters pose. This unit has really helped students become more aware of ways they can make a positive impact on Earth as well as the importance of being prepared for a natural disaster in order to reduce the impact on our environment and communities.

Grade 3 Stability and Motion: Forces and Interactions

Our STEAM class is finishing the Project Lead the Way module, Stability and Motion: Forces and Interactions. In this module, students learned about simple machines such as wheel and axles, levers, inclined planes, pulleys, screws and wedges. We investigated the effect of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. We are currently investigating magnetic interactions and how magnets can attract or repel. Throughout the unit, students were given opportunities to reflect on new knowledge and skills attained in order to improve their tiger rescue designs. The students will begin to design their final solution to rescue the tiger using the knowledge they acquired about simple machines, compound machines, and magnetic interactions. We are excited to hear and view the final designs they create!
