Falcon News- December 2022
December 2022
Principal's Message
Aloha Hickam Families,
We hope you had a restful and relaxing Thanksgiving break. With only three weeks left of the second quarter here are some important reminders. With many of our families traveling during the winter break, we ask for your assistance in scheduling holiday travel during the break. If this is not possible, please remember contractually HIDOE teachers are not required to provide work due to family trips or vacations.
Yet, our school's website, hickam.k12.hi.us is loaded with links to the educational programming our school uses to help supplement learning if needed. Only three more weeks, we got this Falcons! Let's have a great end to our quarter and a restful and relaxing winter break spent with family and friends. Mahalo!
Sincerely,
Patrick Wetzel
Principal
Federal Survey Cards
By completing the survey for each child, we are able to recover these monies. With nearly all of our families living on or working on federal property, it is imperative to have these surveys completed. Every impact aid card completed allows us to receive more money. Historically, funding has offset costs for Hawaii Common Core-aligned curriculum resources, student transportation, school utilities (electricity), teacher substitutes, the Military Liaison program, school portables, and other services. Last year, our department collected $40 million in federal impact aid money.
This is where we need your help. Currently, we have only 10% of federal survey cards turned in to our school. Hard copies of the federal impact aid cards were distributed to your (child) ren today. If you could please fill these cards out, it would help us to achieve our goal of 100%. Thank you for your assistance with this matter.
Manzelman Parking Lot and the Tower Lighting Event
From Dec 7th through Dec 12th (W-Fr, M), the Manzelman parking lot adjacent to Freedom Tower will be unavailable due to the tower's lighting. We ask you to drop off your child (ren) at the Manzelman Circle drive. We will have extra people to assist with morning drop off during this time. If you have to park, we recommend using 8th and 9th streets as a possible alternative.
Otherwise, we hope you can make it to the event. Attached below is a flyer.
December Breakfast and Lunch Menu
Also, don't forget to pick up your Christmas trees on December 3rd!
Our Falcon Fun Run was an amazing success! Thank you for all the support.
Make-up Picture Day- Dec 8th
Forms will be sent home the first week of December for students that are new to Hickam Elementary School. Students are allowed to free dress on December 8th. If you need a new form because your child was not here on picture day to order photos please inform your child's teacher. These forms need to be turned in to the photographer on Dec. 8th.
If you do not like your previously purchased photos, you can send the entire package in with your student to have a make up photo taken. Please include a note about what needs to be corrected in the photo and inform their teacher. Only students that need a photo take one, so please make sure their teacher knows to send them for pictures.

Technology Coordinators’ Message
Our students learn to create games and practice coding skills in technology class every week, but during December they can join millions of students around the world celebrating Computer Science Education Week (December 3-9) with the Hour of Code. Happy Coding everyone!
Choose Love
Hickam Elementary School's Social Emotional Learning program is called Choose Love. This quarter we are focusing on Gratitude. “Gratitude is mindful thankfulness and the ability to be thankful even when things in life are challenging.” -Choose Love Movement
After-School Club Spotlight
Most of our after-school Clubs will start meeting this week. We are so excited to offer these great opportunities for our students.
One of those opportunities was the The Amazing Shake at Aliamanu Middle School. 11 of our students participated in a contest that measures the students' "social skills" to include critical thinking, networking, and poise under pressure. They all did well and we are proud of the drive our Hickam students to even try this new opportunity. Go Falcons!
