The Industrial revolution
By Brett Barrow
Summary
The industrial revolution was the time when people started making up new ideas and started inventing machines to replace the work of man. During the Industrial revolution 90% of people moved to the city so that they could work in factories. Even children worked in factories. Diseases spread more quickly and more people died at a young age. Most people got married at the age of 17 because that was about halfway through their life. the industrial revolution started in England but moved to the United States about midway through. there where two parts to the industrial revolution the first part was centered in England and the second part was centered in the United States.
Inventors
There was a lot of inventions being made at the time of the Industrial revolution. One of the inventions was the Light bulb, it was used for affordable light that could be used in every room. Another invention was the cotton gin. It was used to pick the seeds out of cotton so that it could be used in clothes and other things, Now cotton is used in almost all clothes. One more of the inventions was the Telephone. The first telephone was only used for rich people. It was used to talk to people who are far away. Many people have improved the idea of Telephones. Now most people own a smaller version that can do more than with the first telephone that most people know as a land line. These are three of the many inventions of the industrial revolution.
Child Labor
Child labor was common in the industrial revolution time period. Children often would work in factories for long hours and low pay. Children would often have no shoes and their feet would be slick black with oil. They would be bruised and battered from the work of the machines that they would work with. Bones that where broken often weren't treated and never fully healed. Children would start working at the age of 5 to 11 and keep working until they were around 20. Many people got married to fellow factory workers. child labor was a way to make goods faster than having one person working at the same rate for more money because they were experts and adults. Eventually, the age for child labor was moved from 5 to 8 and from 8 to 12 until eventually settling on 18. Immigrants from Ireland and other English countries ended up filling the jobs that the children would do and they would get payed even less because they didn't speak the language.
The assembly line
The assembly line was one of the most revolutionary inventions in the industrial revolution. It was invented by Henry Ford and he also improved it by involving the conveyor belt.the assembly line improved how fast people could build goods or products. ten experts may have gotten 40 hats done in a day. with the assembly line 10 inexperienced people who only know how to put one part together may get 120 hats done in a day and get payed less because they couldn't work without everybody. Without the conveyor belt in one day a group makes 12 goods, but with the conveyor belt added that same group gets 24 done. At first people who worked at assembly lines worked there because they had no money and needed to pay something off. Eventually the factory jobs and assembly line jobs went to immigrants from places like England or Scotland. They couldn't speak the language so they would work more hours for less pay because it was less work and more pay than they got back in their country. Most of the immigrants would have been put in workhouses back in England and the United Kingdom. The workhouses were places where places where people who couldn't afford a house would be sent to work for a room in the house part. many people would rather die than go to a workhouse because they make people feel miserable and they split up families.
