West Godwin Weekly
Week of September 13, 2021
This Week's Learning Update:
Kindergarten: Our first month of school is underway and in Kindergarten we are learning about being a student at West Godwin. Students will be learning about our school & classroom rules and routines. Our phonics lessons are introducing students to sounds that are the same and different and learning about rhyming words. In math we are learning about sorting objects, learning about shapes, counting to 20 forwards and backwards. Students will be introduced to how we can be readers and writers by participating in daily lessons.
First Grade: This month, first graders will be building their love for and stamina with reading and writing by establishing strong reader's and writer's workshop routines. In math, we will working on counting (with popsicles...yum!), building a strong sense of numbers to ten using number racks, and adding and subtracting.
Second Grade: This month second grade is working on setting up our reading and writing routines. We are going to be doing a lot of journal writing this year. In math we are focused on adding and subtracting within 20.
EL: Welcome back to school! If your child is in the EL program at West Godwin, they will receive a blue letter that tells about the type of support they will receive at school. Please sign this blue letter and return it as soon as possible. We can't wait to start working with our EL students again!
PE: Welcome back to PE at West :) It's going to be a hot start to the year, so we want to make sure your kiddos are comfortable. Please make sure to send your child with a labeled water bottle and shoes that they can run in.
Music: Welcome to music at West! We are starting out by sharing what we love about music, songs and instruments. We are also finding (and moving to) the beat in many different songs.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL): This week in Social Emotional Learning, all students will be exploring what it looks like to work in a group setting. Kindergarten students will be learning to build positive and productive peer relationships by understanding their roles and responsibilities as group members in diverse groups. 1st Graders will be learning about three different group roles: group member, collector, and reporter. Students will have the opportunity to explore what it looks like to work cooperatively in a group and build relational skills . 2nd Graders will be learning about four group roles: group member, collector, recorder, and reporter. They will have an opportunity to learn about and practice successful cooperation in groups.
If your child will not be riding the bus home, please call the office by 2:30 pm so we are able to accommodate the change.
Drop-Off -Students can be dropped off in the rear lot off of 36th street between 8:15 am and 8:30 am. Staff will call you forward to the flag and open the door for your student.
For safety, we ask that you and your student remain in your vehicle until staff directs you to the drop-off area. Please have your child’s coat on and additional items ready prior to pulling into the drop-off zone.
Pick-Up- Students can be picked up in the rear lot off 36th street between 3:15 pm & 3:30 pm. Please remember to have your student information sign in your window.
Please pay close attention to security officers and staff directing traffic daily. For safety please follow directions of staff during pick-up and drop-off and practice slow speeds through the student drop-off pick-up zone.
Please observe the Right Turn Only Sign as you exit the parking lot. Attempts to turn left have resulted in some extremely close calls when entering traffic on 36th street.
