Reminders and Announcements
2. Winners of the Humane Society Final Push Collection are: Mrs. McDonald, Ms. M. Rogers, Ms. McDowell, and Mrs. Watson. Thanks everyone for collecting! I know that I also owe Mrs. Hartgen and Mrs. Jones an extra recess. Let me get through RTI week and I will get everyone scheduled. Thank you for your patience!
3. FanTABulous Contest - Our goal is to save more than last year's total of 168 pounds. Turn your tabs into Mrs. Moriarty with your class name. The class in each grade level with the most tabs wins a prize.
- Kindergarten - Newsom (2 lbs.)
- 1st grade - There is a tight battle for first place...Jones has pulled ahead with 3lbs. 9 oz.
- 2nd grade - Bennett's class is ahead by 6 oz, but Murphy is sneaking up on them.
- Special - Galbratih (13 oz.)
- TOTAL so far = 38 lbs. 5 oz.
4. Box Tops for Education - We are collecting box tops to help pay for our PBIS store. Please turn them into Ms. Newsom in kindergarten or put them in the box in the office.
5. THANKS TO ALL THAT HAVE VOLUNTEERED! I am so proud to be a Primary Chickasaw! I love that you all were eager to connect with the kids outside of school. We are asking that each staff member donate a bag of candy for this event. For each staff member that brings a medium to large size bag of candy, a jeans pass will be given (up to two jeans passes). Candy must be individually wrapped. Please drop candy off in the offices with secretaries. They will have a sheet to keep track of who donates candy, so I know who to give jeans passes to after the event. Thanks for your help in connecting with our community!
PBIS Behavior Matrix Focus
- Monday - Watch this video song about kindness with your students. Introduce the focus of the week by having students brainstorm what they think "using kind words" means.
- Tuesday - Kindness Sort - Watch the video read aloud of the book Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed. Then go to link to download the activity and complete the sort with your students.
- Wednesday - Kindness Sensory activity - Go to the link and complete the activity with your students. You will need to watch this video for Should I Share My Ice Cream by Mo Willems. You will need the following supplies: coarse sandpaper, cotton balls, and cup.
- Thursday - Kindness Ripple Effect activity - Go to the link and complete the activity with your students. You will need to watch this video for The Lion and the Mouse. You will need the following supplies: container with water, objects that are small/large/light/heavy
- Friday - Kindness Chain - Prep before activity: Cut out strips of different colored construction paper.) Review what you have learned this week about kindness with your students. Talk about the different forms of kindness - kind words, kind actions, kind hands, and kind thoughts. Have students brainstorm a list of kind things they have experienced or done this week. Write the top five from the list on separate strips and show them how to construct the chain. As you construct the chain, talk about how when someone does something kind to us, we feel good and want to do something kind for another person. That makes them feel good and want to do something kind themselves. It is a chain. Ask your students: Can we do more kind things, so we can add to our chain? When students experience a kind act or do an act of kindness for someone else, they tell you and you add a link to the chain. Challenge them to have the longest kindness chain in the school. We will be taking pictures of each class and their kindness chains as they grow.
Picture Book Recommendation of the Week
Chrysanthemum (Mouse Books) by Kevin Henkes
Chrysanthemum is a funny and honest school story about teasing, self-esteem, and acceptance to share all year round.
Chrysanthemum thinks her name is absolutely perfect—until her first day of school. "You're named after a flower!" teases Victoria.
"Let's smell her," says Jo.
Chrysanthemum wilts. What will it take to make her blossom again?
Resources
A Wrinkled Heart (perfect for our kindness focus this week!) - All you need are paper hearts and the video below. This is a second way to do the wrinkled heart activity and includes a bracelet for students to take home with them.
The following video is a read aloud of Chrysanthemum, performed by Anna Maria Perez de Tagle.
Google Classroom: Professional Learning
I have a created a Google classroom that our professional learning will be housed in instead of me sending emails each time. This will allow us to connect, comment, and learn together in an online environment.
One of the questions on the SAI survey I asked you to complete stated: "In my school, participation in online professional learning opportunities is considered as a way to connect with colleagues, and to learn from experts in education." 38% answered one of the following: "don't know, never, seldom, sometimes." Using Google classroom is one of the online professional learning opportunities I can offer. Not everything has to be face to face to learn. We can learn from each other online as well.
I have already placed the video and handouts for our first flipped staff meeting in our classroom. If you haven't already watched the video, you have until Thursday at 3:30. If you have watched the video and turned in your reflection, please indicated so in Google classroom. I will be sending out a reflection piece about flipped learning since we have done it twice now (handbook video followed by kahoot game was the first time) at the end of the week.
If you have any issues getting to our class, let me know.
Motivational Quote of the Week
What the Principal is Reading
Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
School Culture Recharged by Steve Gruenert and Todd Whitaker
For We Are Many (Bobiverse #2) by Dennis E. Taylor
Bob left Earth anticipating a life of exploration and blissful solitude. Instead he’s a sky god to a primitive native species, the only hope for getting humanity to a new home, and possibly the only thing that can prevent every species in the local sphere ending up as dinner.
