FEBRUARY 2022
FRIENDLY FEBRUARY!
We need each other more than ever right now! This month let's focus on reaching out to connect with others and doing our best to be a good friend. Our acts of kindness and connection ripple out and impact so many more people than we realise - and they also boost our own happy hormones too! In stressful times people around us may be feeling the strain, so let's try to keep calm, take time to listen and show compassion.

NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY IN RECOGNITION OF AMERICAN HEART MONTH
It's February – American Heart Month – a time when the nation spotlights heart disease, the No. 1 killer of Americans.
President Lyndon B. Johnson, among the millions of people in the country who'd had heart attacks, issued the first proclamation in 1964. Since then, U.S. presidents have annually declared February American Heart Month.
Cardiovascular disease is a threat to everyone, at every age, but can be especially prevalent among those of specific ethnic backgrounds or whose circumstances make it difficult to live healthy lives. Covid-19 has only increased the disparities and will likely influence cardiovascular health and mortality for years to come.
Globally, nearly 18.6 million people died of cardiovascular disease in 2019, the latest year for which worldwide statistics are calculated. That reflects a 17.1% increase over the past decade. There were more than 523.2 million cases of cardiovascular disease in 2019, an increase of 26.6% compared with 2010.
Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders (NHPI) and Heart-Disease
- NHPI continue to be significantly disproportionally affected by cardiovascular disease
- In 2019, for every 1 non-NHPI death due to cardiovascular disease, there were almost 4 NHPI deaths (Hawaiʻi State Department of Health, Vital Statistics 2019)
- Similarly, for every 1 non-NHPI death due to stroke, there were 3 NHPI deaths (Hawaiʻi State Department of Health, Vital Statistics 2019)
Even with these dire statistics, we’re not giving up. While the ongoing pandemic has changed the life we live, it’s also encouraged us to focus on mental wellness and reducing stress, find creative ways to stay active (and safe!) and cook healthier meals to keep our immunity in check. Whatever you do in ’22, we encourage you to keep your health in check. We hope you’ll join us in February for Heart Month which is also a time to celebrate strides made in saving lives by increasing health equity and tackling barriers to heart health in our community.
February is also Black History and ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language) month
