2023 Newsletter - Week 2 Term 2
Greenmeadows School, 5th May Newsletter #6: 2023
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora whānau,
What an interesting return to school it was last week with an earthquake to start the term! Most small tremors often pass by unnoticed, but this one was definitely the shakiest one that I can recall occuring during the school day since I've been at Greenmeadows. Your children were amazingly calm and well drilled for such events. In term 4 we will be practising our tsunami hīkoi - the recent shake is a reminder of how important it is for us to be prepared.
Aside from the shaky start, it has been great to welcome the children back from their break and get them ready for a busy term ahead. Kapa haka kicked off this week, and rehearsals have begun in earnest for our production of Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Napier Municipal Theatre later this year. Just a couple of examples of the awesome opportunities that are available to the children at Greenmeadows.
I would like to extend a warm thank you to those who have wished me well in the role that I have taken on for the remainder of the year. While it is still early days in the Big Chair, I can say that I am already enjoying the new challenge.
Ka kite anō,
Darren Holloway
Acting Principal
WELCOME TO GREENMEADOWS SCHOOL
Since the start of the term we have had seven new arrivals at school. We welcome these wonderful new students to GMS:
Pippa and Zoe Somerville, Aliyah-Dawn Murdoch-Nicho, Dexter Arnold, Adeline McCarthy and Dillon Kerney.
Our roll at present is 430.
CHANGES AROUND OUR SCHOOL
Goodbye tree During Cyclone Gabrielle our large elm tree beside the pedestrian crossing on Gloucester Street was damaged by high winds. Due to safety concerns about the split in the trunk it unfortunately had to be removed. | Goodbye prefabs All of the prefabs have now been removed from our grounds and work has begun on making the deck safe for our juniors to use. It was certainly an impressive feat of engineering to lift and remove these buildings. Hopefully they have made their way safely to their new home. |
Goodbye tree
ANZAC DAY
Next week, on Thursday, our Year 6 children will join others from local schools at a special event commemorating ANZAC Day. This is a neat event, organised by learners from our local high schools, and is warmly appreciated by the veterans who regularly attend.
On Friday, our regular whole school assembly will be replaced with our own, unique Greenmeadows School ANZAC service. At that time we hope to hear speeches from Willow Hambleton and Zoe Steyn, both of whom represented our school at the ANZAC Speech Competition this morning.
