Mrs. Poliszczuk's First Grade Class
weekly update
September 23, 2016
This week in phonics, students practiced reading and writing words with the short o sound as in octopus. Students also learned to put words in ABC order and practiced using correct ending punctuation.
In reading, students learned to use the "5 finger retell" to summarize stories. We practiced with the story Big Al and Shrimpy. We are also continuing the very important skill of thinking while we are reading. One of the ways we do this is by thinking about the characters. Students practiced good listening skills in order to not only identify the physical traits of the characters, but also their words, thoughts and actions. Identifying character traits also helps the students make connections to the story.
In math, students practiced solving addition story problems using the draw a picture and counting on strategies. We practiced the problem solving steps: visualize, retell, think and share. Students played several games which provided additional practice in adding to find the sum.
In Social Studies, we looked at a variety of maps and map keys. Students also used cardinal directions to locate places on a map.
