Fall Picture Day - Next Friday, October 12

An order form came home in Thursday Folders this week. Please be sure that you fill out the order form and include payment or write down the online code if you make the purchase online. Each student must provide an order form/envelope when they come to get their picture taken. Fall pictures are pre-purchase only, so if you wish to order pictures of your student, you must pay ahead. If you get the pictures and aren't happy with them, your student will be allowed to re-take them on a different day. The student will have to bring the complete purchased package back in order to get a new picture taken. Online purchases can be placed at https://entry.imagequix.com/strawbridge/?code=100796

A huge heartfelt thank you to our Claxton community for making this year’s Fun Run the most successful Fun Run yet! Please have all of your pledge money turned in byOctober 11. Classroom Wishes and Needs

Book Leveling Help: If you're excited to kick off the school year volunteering for Claxton and might still be waiting for a Level II training or for approval of your background check, we have a current volunteer need that does not have these requirements. Our teachers have classroom libraries with books arranged according to reading level. Several of our teachers would love to have help with organizing their libraries by level. This task involves scanning the bar code on books into a database/app and then categorizing the books into levels. Having volunteers complete this task would be a tremendous support to our teachers! Please email miriam.scott@acsgmail.net if you can help!

5th Grade 1-on-1 Volunteer: Our 5th grade teaching team is looking for volunteers to work with students one-on-one to support a range of needs in the classroom. The time commitment is flexible but it would be great if a volunteer had a few hours per week to offer for several months or for the year. Volunteers need to have a current background check and must have attended a Level II ACS training. Please email miriam.scott@acsgmail.net if you can help!

Join CLXLeaders for a Good Cause--Eblen Charities' Walk, Run, or Roll!!!

Claxton is putting a team together for Eblen Charities 18th Annual Walk, Run or Roll event taking place Saturday October 13th at 9:00 am. All funds raised help Eblen Charities to keep helping out more than 125,000 local families with medical care and supplies, travel assistance, dental and prescription care, funding assistance for food, rent, heat and other emergency aid. We value Eblen's services to families and want to get together a team of amazing CLXLeaders who will WALK with us and raise money for Eblen. Want to join? Register here by finding team name CLXLeaders on Eblen's website.

Serving as a Volunteer in the Classroom or as a Field Trip Chaperone This Year

Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for them to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to act now. You don't want to miss a chance to help out as a volunteer! https://bib.com/SecureVolunteer/Asheville-City-Schools/

Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule.

All trainings are held in the Board Room at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.

The full ACS Volunteer Training Schedule for 2018-2019 is linked here. Dates coming soon include--

Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at 5:30 PM

Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at 12:00 PM

Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at 12:00 PM

If you have any questions about volunteer requirements for Claxton and Asheville City Schools, please contact miriam.scott@acsgmail.net.

Claxton Crafty -- Save the Date and Call for Vendors and Musicians

Mark your calendars for Sat Nov 10 for the Claxton Crafty at the Salvage Station from 10am-4pm! We invite vendors and musicians to join in this great event. Proceeds from booth rental fees go directly to support Claxton Elementary School (and vendors keep 100% of their own sales). We're planning to host the event outside but our backup plan in case of rain or cold is to use the inside space at Salvage Station. The link to the application is below. Please complete the application and we'll be in touch with further details and vendor booth rental payment information. We are planning on having live music, again provided by talented members of our Claxton family and other community members. Mr. Butler, our music teacher, is helping to coordinate this. If you know anyone else (adult, child, professional, or novice) who may be interested in performing, please let us know. Thank you for your interest!

For more information, please contact Tricia Johnson at tiller91@bellsouth.net or 828-231-4078.
