Folsom Weekly Update

Message from Dr. Mazzoni
Dear Folsom Team,
Hallway Passes
There has been ongoing discussion about students in the hallway and bathrooms without passes. Moving forward, all students are to have a pass when traveling to the bathroom, office, nurse, etc.
Secondly, limit the number of students using the bathroom in your class to one student at a time. This may help alleviate any issues we are experiencing in the bathrooms. Of course, we cannot refuse a student the bathroom if it's an emergency.
8th Grade Dialogue and Reception
The Atlantic County School Boards Association is hosting its Annual "8th Grade Dialogue and Reception." This student recognition program honors 8th grade students whose character, determination, school spirit, leadership and community service inspire all of us. The student does not have to be the highest ranking student in the class. They should be comfortable speaking to a group and be well versed in their school community.
The 8th grade student selected will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings about his/her school experiences, aspirations and recommendations on how to improve Folsom.
I am requesting for the 8th grade teachers to discuss this on Friday during morning session and have a student's name to me by the end of the day.
Congratulations to Ms. Santilli!
Ms. Santilli successfully won a grant to receive a 2019 Hess Toy Truck STEM kit! The kit includes the 2019 Hess Tow Truck Rescue Team along with an entire STEM curriculum. Great job Ms. Santilli!
Respectfully,

Message from the Commissioner of Education
Dear Colleagues,
February is Black History Month, a time to honor and to acknowledge our rich heritage and the significant contributions that people of African descent have made in the State of New Jersey and across the United States.
Black history is American history, and we’re working to effectively integrate the history and contributions of African Americans into curriculum in a more meaningful and equitable way. Last fall, the DOE and the New Jersey Education Association announced a partnership to create the “Amistad Journey” – a program designed to allow educators to travel to some of the historic sites of the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Within the DOE, the Amistad Commission serves as model for the nation, and as a resource for the more than 115,000 New Jersey teachers and administrators who are tasked by this legal mandate to bring our historical contributions to the forefront. Through the commission, teachers can attend summer institutes and tap into curriculum resources.
It is intrinsically important that our teachers and children be exposed to the kind of social studies curriculum that ensures they will develop a deep understanding of the histories, legacies and contributions of all of us. For those in a position to mentor others, as all educators are, the words of Carter G. Woodson, the author, historian and Black History Month founder come to mind: “Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.”
Sincerely,
Lamont O. Repollet, Ed.D.
