Speech and Debate
Hood River Valley Speech and Debate placed 3rd out of 42 teams at the Clackamas Holiday Edge Speech Tournament on December 2, 2017. The team took 28 students to the event, which is the largest tournament in Oregon each year. Earning placements in the final rounds were Senior Ruby Patterson, 2nd Place in Expository Speaking, Senior Mason Leavitt, 2nd Place in Impromptu, Senior Diego Murphy-Mendez, 3rd Place in Original Oratory, Sophomore Audrey Schlemmer, 2nd Place in Dramatic Interpretation, Sophomore Maggie Bertrand, 2nd Place in Novice Poetry, Sophomore Erick Lizama, 7th Place in After Dinner Speaking, and Freshman Jacob Kaplan, 2nd Place in both Novice Impromptu and Novice Prose and 3rd Place in Open Storytelling.
HRV Performing Arts is fresh off of a very successful run of "Fiddler on the Roof." The students battled heavy smoke days by adding long Saturday practices to bring a sellout production to the Bowe stage. Currently the theatre department is in preproduction work for two plays that will run concurrently, "Steel Magnolias" and "Terra Nova." Plan now to attend two remarkable plays.
