A Note from the Principal...
Greetings Parents:
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES:
Parent-teacher conferences will be held on October 22, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. We will be scheduling these conference online this year. Your child’s teacher will send you an email with a link to the scheduling program. You will access the program, select a time slot and enter your name, email address, your child’s name and a phone number. The program will send you an email with a confirmation notice. You will also receive two email reminders about the time and date of the conference. These conferences will be established on a first-come, first-served basis. It will be to your advantage to establish the conference time as early as possible after receiving the email link to the scheduling program. If you have more than one child, you will have to enter each one with their teacher’s link. Each conference will be for 15 minutes. If a longer conference is necessary, you need to set a time and date with the teacher outside of the scheduled time.
CHANGING TRANSPORTATOIN:
Please try to make any phone calls changing transportation by 3:00 p.m. This is the time we will contact teachers about the changes. This helps us insure that messages are delivered and students are notified without interfering with ongoing instruction.
UNITED WAY:
The Plainfield community School Family will, once again this year, be participating in the United Way of Central Indiana fundraising efforts. Brentwood, as always, is proud to participate. Each year, Brentwood’s parents, students and staff rise to the occasion of raising funds to help support needy families in Central Indiana, including Hendricks County. This is an excellent opportunity for us to teach our children about the importance of giving to others in through charitable donations. We are able to accomplish this during a fun week of showing our BW spirit. Brentwood Spirit Week is set for October 5th – 9th. During this week, students will be allowed to participate in the activity fo the day for just $1 for each day of participation. Keep reading to finds out what the themed days are for this upcoming week of fun and spirit here at Brentwood:
Student spirit Week - $1 donation per day of participation:
Day 1 – Brentwood students are BRIGHT – wear sunglasses
Day 2 – Brentwood students are TOPS – wear a hat
Day 3 – Brentwood is a SWEET school – bring a sweet treat to eat and enjoy during the class’s designated time.
Day 4 – Brentwood is s school that STICKS to excellence – students can chew gum for the day ( it can’t be seen or heard, though)
Day 5 – Brentwood students work so hard, they deserve SECONDS – a second 10 minute recess.
This should be an exciting week at Brentwood and we hope your child will be able to be a part of the fun while learning a valuable lesson about giving. Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Mr. Underwood

Staff MVP of the Week ~ Mrs. Ashley Henry, 2nd Grade Teacher
This week's staff Most Valuable Player is 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Ashley Henry. Mrs. Henry has been teaching for 10 years. All ten years have been in second grade at Brentwood!
Mrs. Henry grew up on the northwest side of Indy and went to Pike High School. She attended Butler University for my Bachelor's degree and then went to Indiana Wesleyan for her Masters. Mrs. Henry has been married to her husband Ryan for 8 years. They live here in Plainfield with their daughter Reagan, "who is four going on thirty!" Mr. and Mrs. Henry are expecting a little boy due in November! (Baby Boy Henry's name is yet to be decided!) The Henry family has 3 cats named Piecer, Riles, and Chici all of whom are very sweet, but very lazy!
Some of Mrs. Henry's Faves:
Color-PinkMovie-Shawshank Redemption
TV Show-Survivor
Children's book-anything by Jack Prelutsky
Music-all little bit of everything...country, classical, anything I can dance to
Flower-daisies
Restaurant-Passions (in Aruba!) "You can eat with your feet in the sand and watch the sunset!"
Candy-Starburst Jellybeans
What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t teaching? "My husband and I love to travel whenever we get the chance. We really like to go anywhere that has a beach and where we can go snorkeling. I also really enjoying cooking out with friends and family in my free time."
Where is the most interesting place you have been? "Probably ziplining through the rainforest in Panama! I've never seen such large insects or leaves!"
What is a teacher / student moment you remember fondly? "I don't have a specific moment that comes to mind. Instead I think more of the day-to-day experiences where kids have "lightbulb" moments and they finally get something that they have been working toward. It is so rewarding to see everyone's hard work, time, and dedication pay off when you see something start to "click" with a student. It's a great feeling when you can see a student's confidence and love for learning start to grow!"
As a second grade teacher, what advice do you have for parents on how they can be involved in their child’s education? "As a parent myself I understand how busy and hectic our lives can become making it hard to be involved. My advice is to find even the simplest way to become involved with your child's school experience. Anything from reading a few minutes each night, to practicing math facts, to having a simple conversation about their school day shows your support with their education. I believe when students feel they have a lot of people behind them (parents, teachers, coaches, etc.) it helps motivate them to do their very best in school and to not give up when the work becomes difficult."
Fellow 2nd grade teachers Mrs. Edwards and Mrs. Hamlin absolutely LOVE teaching alongside Mrs. Henry. They had the following words to say about their colleague:
Mrs. Edwards says,
Ashley and I have taught in second grade together for many years, and I am blessed to not only call her a colleague but a great friend. She has taught me many things throughout the years which has made me a better teacher. I enjoy planning with her while bouncing ideas off of each other in order to better meet the needs of the students. She is a “resource queen!” (games, books, supplemental activities)
She has a kind heart and genuinely cares for each of her students. Her students know that she puts their learning needs first and will do anything to help them grow as a learner. My daughter had Mrs. Henry in second grade, and she still talks about the fun during the year. She specifically remembers all of the books choices that were in her library. She developed a love for reading that year and Mrs. Henry is one of her favorite teachers."
And Mrs. Hamlin's words, "
I love working with Ashley! Her enthusiasm, work ethic, organization, and kind heart are always shining through! She contributes so much to our 2nd grade team. She puts a great amount of time and effort in to her plans. Ashley always has new ideas and keeps learning fun for her students. You can tell Ashley genuinely cares for her students. She goes to great lengths to meet the needs of every child in her class.
She’s a teacher the students always love and remember. I’m thankful for the opportunity to work with her!"
