May 26 Last Day to Return Library Books

All library books are due by Thursday May 26. Please make sure to look for missing books and turn them into the library as soon as possible. In addition to the automated messages from the district, we will be sending a reminder paper with photos of the book’s title, cover photo, circulation barcode, and due date. Books that were checked out prior to March that still haven’t been returned have been marked as lost. Books that cannot be located as we near the end of the school year will also be considered lost.

If you and your child cannot find a lost book, you may pay for the book with cash (please provide the exact amount) or a check payable to Columbia Elementary. Please turn this into the library first so we can clear your child’s account. If you pay for a lost book but find it later and turn it in, you may be eligible for a refund within six months of payment.

An alternate option is to replace the book. It must be the same title and the same type of binding. For example, a hardcover copy of Dog Man must be replaced with another hardcover Dog Man. Paperbacks will not be accepted for lost hardcovers. If you wish to provide a replacement, please email Mrs. Griffin at griffinka@mukilteo.wednet.edu first to find out what type of binding will be accepted.

If a book is returned damaged, the library will also issue a paper notification. Books may either be replaced or paid for, the same as lost books.

It is important that students are responsible for the care and return of their books. Please help your student look at home, at daycare, in cars, and anywhere you may have possibly taken books. We will also help students look in the library and in their classrooms.

Thank you!

Mrs. Griffin

Cougar Beach Party

Get ready to welcome summer!

Our first ever Columbia Cougar Beach Day is next Friday, June 3rd from 4-7. We are expecting HUNDREDS of guests, so please consider carpooling or taking the bus, as parking is limited at Lighthouse Beach Park. The Mukilteo resident parking passes have not been issued yet for this year - the current passes that expired at the end of April are still considered valid by the city. If you do not have a parking pass, you will need to pay to park at the kiosk.

The shelters are rented as a "home base" for our celebration and to keep the food, but our group will be far too big to allow everyone to sit at the tables there. Bring your own chair/seating if you'd like to be sure to have a place to sit.

We will have sandwiches from Jimmy John's available, popsicles and plan to serve cake, all funded by PTA. We are asking for families to contribute sides and beverages if you can, here is our signup: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e49afa62aa3ffce9-june

The vision for this day was simply to have an opportunity for students and families to gather in celebration of our school year, to be able to meet up and play outside of school. As with any school event, every student/child in attendance have an adult taking responsibility for their supervision.

Thank you for your partnership to make a safe and fun Beach Day for everyone! If you have any further questions, please contact president@mycolumbiapta.org

Mr. KAAS' Food Drive June 3-10

You can help struggling families keep food on the table. Our Spring Food Drive will be running June 3 - 10. If you are able to help, there will be drop boxes in the front office.

Most needed food items are: dry-beans, rice, oatmeal, tuna, canned chilli, macaroni and cheese, cereal, etc. Items low in sugar and high protein are appreciated.

The Mukilteo Food Bank will also accept Monetary donations to purchase meat and produce (http://www.mukilteofoodbank.org)

Mukilteo School District is once again permitting volunteers in our schools.

ALL volunteers must have current volunteer paperwork on file with the district, and be cleared prior to volunteering

We are following this guidance:

  • District Volunteer Policy and Confidentiality Statement.
  • Volunteer Application Disclosure Form.
  • Request for Criminal History Information form. Copy of ID must be attached to the form.
  • All volunteers must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
  • We will start small to ensure safety protocols can be followed by limiting the number of non-essential adults in the building at any one time.
  • For security purposes, ALL volunteers are required to wear a volunteer badge for the duration of activity/event.

If you are interested in volunteering at Columbia you are encouraged to pick up a volunteer packet in the office. Plan to return materials, show photo ID and proof of vaccination at the front office.

Once your application has been cleared, your child’s teacher will be notified and they will contact you according to their volunteer needs in the classroom.

From the Nurse's Office

COVID Update: You may have seen in recent news that COVID cases are increasing again, though not nearly as high as we experienced in January of this year. For our school district, positive COVID cases doubled during Spring Break and are rapidly increasing.

We have also seen an increase in symptomatic students at school. In order to slow the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses in our school communities, please

  1. Keep your student home if they have ANY of the following symptoms then call the Nurse Hotline at 425-366-7745 for guidance and testing information:

Sore throat, runny nose or congestion, headache, unusual fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, fever, muscle or body aches or shortness of breath.

  2. Consider asking your student to mask up. We know that masks slow the spread of disease. Our Snohomish Health District is emphasizing mask wearing and urging people to voluntarily wear masks in most public spaces or crowded or outdoor settings. Our District continues to support mask wearing, though it is not mandated at this time.

Remember it is your responsibility to contact the school 24 Hours attendance line at (425) 366-2605 to report absences. Please refrain from calling the office between 8:45 - 9:05 to report an absence.

Your students will see me in their classrooms teaching Bully Prevention, and Child Safety classes for K-5. I also meet with students and families regarding mental health, behavioral and social emotional concerns.

In addition to dealing with matters associated with your child's social well-being in school, I am here to assist with school clothes and other resources such as food.
