St. Louis Catholic School News
September 16, 2021
Principal's Corner
From the Principal's Desk
This week, our Catholic Church celebrated The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. Both bring us back to the time of Christ's death and are a reminder that both Mary and Jesus endured suffering in order to fulfill God's plan. We also each endure our own battles. Should we find ourselves in a time of "suffering" may we too lift our prayers to God to help us through. May we also pray for all who are enduring hard times in our families, communities, and world.
COVID Update
I am happy to say that our number of quarantines are down and that most of those quarantines have stemmed from outside of school. As a reminder, when testing your students we do need it to be done in a clinical setting and not a home test.
Festival Updates
Remember it is not too late to contribute a basket for the festival booth. Feel free to drop it off at either office.
Thanks for making adjustments in your pick-up and drop off procedures with us this week. As a reminder, students should be dropped off at the corner of South Walnut (between Helena and St. Louis Place). We have had some very close incidents of students running out in front of buses or cars stopping to drop off in front of school and a bus not expecting that.
Super Sunday Bingo
Our Super Sunday Bingo event scheduled for November sold out in 2 days time. For those of you who aren't aware, St. Louis Bingo is the leading fundraising activity for our school. Last May, it netted over $60,000 for the school. This November, our crowd will be slightly larger, but is still limited to 350 players. All the helping hands truly make a difference and an impression on the players. They LOVE seeing our volunteers and LOVE supporting the school. Please make plans to help at our November 7th event. Please email Michael Brelage (sls.ss.bingo@gmail.com) to get involved.
Subs Needed
St. Louis Catholic School is trying to add to its sub list. Do you have an open day each week? Do you have a really flexible schedule? Do you know someone who might be a great fit? We would love to hear from you. We can work with your schedule and even your comfort level as needed. Please call the school office (812-934-3310) to inquire further.
After School Care
We will be starting our after school care program up again once we get our new hire cleared through all the requirements from the Archdiocese. I am happy to report that Mrs. Gretchen Phillips will take over the lead role for ASC and Miss Britney Venis (a preschool assistant) will assist her. Gretchen has previously run a daycare in her home and has also worked in other daycare environments. We will send out a notice once we have everything in place to restart the program after school.
Have a great weekend everyone! Hope it involves listening to a band, eating a little chicken, and lending a helping hand if you can at the Parish Festival.
God bless!
Patty

Thanks to our participants in the scanning of receipts for the Box Top program. August was a very good month. SLS earned $118.60 with just 30 people scanning 100 receipts.
We currently have 69 people signed up for the program, with one new sign up in August.
We are at $247.70 for the start of the school year.
Thank you everyone for your help in reaching our $1000.00 goal for 2021-2022!
REMINDER:
Paper box tops are still being collected for the Fall Collection.
Please send these to school or drop off in back of Church before October 20th.
Keep saving your Coke codes. We earned $12.00 with this program in August. That may not sound like a lot, but with every cap counting as 5 cents, it adds up. Thank you.

St. Joseph the Worker
This year SLS students and staff are focusing on the Year of St. Joseph and Catholic Social Teaching
Our September Themes are: St. Joseph the Worker and the Dignity of Work
Our Daily Prayer for Announcements:
Dear God,
Sometimes I have trouble doing the chores and other jobs I'm asked to do.
Help me to remember how St. Joseph worked hard each and every day.
Protect me from the temptation to be lazy and disobedient. Give me the grace
to be a humble servant to my family and the world just as St. Joseph did.
Amen.
During the remainder of September, and in honor of St. Joseph the Worker, we will honor our dads, stepdads, grandpas, uncles, brothers, or other important male role models.
Students in the younger grades will also be thinking about what work they may want to do when they grow up and how they can serve God, while students in the older grades may be asked to interview their dad/stepdad/grandpa/uncle/brother/or other important male role model about the responsibilities and sacrifices that they make for their family and others. (Just like St. Joseph did!)
Schrank's Farm visit
Henry Candelot- "I learned about old school tools, like crosscut saws used to cut pieces of wood." Carter Scalf- "We dropped apples into a cider press. The machine cut the apples. A lid pressed against the apples and made cider." Evan Jennings and Samson Walmsley- "I learned how pioneers use knives on their lower leg to cut corn and put them in shocks. They also used corn knives to cut the corn." John Raver- "I learned how they made brooms out of straw." Tess Rennekamp- "I learned what the kids did for chores and how they washed their clothes. They made homemade soap or bought it from the market. They rubbed the soap on a washboard. They rung out their wet clothes through wringers." Katie Hohenstein- "We stirred cream until it turned into butter." Bea Thompson- "We learned how to shell corn by hand. We also used a hand-crank to shell corn." Claire Baker- "We guessed what different antiques were." Caden Hautman- "We made cornmeal. We used a hand-crank to crush the corn." Brock Scheibler- "A man showed us how blacksmiths made horseshoes and things made of metal and heat." Kristen Obermeyer- "A man took three strings and a machine twisted them to make rope."

Breakfast Program
At school, there's always a meal ready to be served! Some mornings, it's tough to find the time to make sure your kids are eating a nutritious breakfast. On those days, why not send them to our School Breakfast Program? Each meal meets government nutritional guidelines and standards. Schools are required to provide a breakfast meal that includes fruit, whole-grain rich items, and low fat or fat free milk. Check your child's menu to see the variety of nutritious choices available at School Breakfast, or stop by to sample the food yourself!
Breakfast is served from 7:30-7:50 each morning in the SLS cafeteria.

St. Louis vs Batesville 7/8 volleyball
Last night St. Louis went across town to take on Batesville Middle School. While we didn't come home with any wins we did fight hard.
The 7th grade team lost in two games with final scores of 21-25 and 9-25. Serving us points were Olivia Leising with 7pts 1ace, Campbell Miles with 3pts, and both Ava Hollins and Madi Dierckman with 1pt each. While we fought really hard in game one to come back for the win we just couldn't pull it off. Our second game we struggled to take off and our serves just weren't there overall. We did have a handful of plays in the back and front row that were crucial, but just weren't enough.
The 8th grade girls also lost in two with very close games ending with scores of 23-25 and 20-25. Serving points for us were Cora Roth with 8pts 4 aces, Felicity Brelage 6pts 1ace, Rachel Suttmann 5pts 3aces, Sophia Hohenstein 1pt 1 ace, and both Bridget Lohmueller and Ashley Hunter with 1pt each. This team fought back in both games to give them a run. We had some really great front row plays that changed the swing of play. Our serve receive was a downfall at the start of each game but we did find it midway. Overall the best game I have seen these ladies play to date mentally! Nice job.

Fall in Love with the Arts in Batesville
After a busy summer of Umbrellas, public murals, art installations and live entertainment, Batesville Area Art Council is not slowing down. While Umbrella Sky events continue into October, two new events have been added to our busy Fall offerings:
Saturday, September 25 th and 26 th , 11:00 am-4:00 pm: BAAC Community Art Walk. Join BAAC for a guided or self-guided tour of over 30 original pieces of art in and around the downtown district of Batesville. This event is free and open to everyone in our community. For the first time ever, the public will get a personalized tour and learn interesting facts about the art installations around town and in three of our downtown schools: Saint Louis School, Batesville Middle School and Batesville Intermediate School. This extensive collection of art is made possible by many visiting artists through BAAC’s nationally recognized Arts-In-Education Program, as well as grants from Indiana Arts Commission, Office of Community and Rural Affairs, and National Endowment for the Arts.
Walking tours will be approximately 90 minutes in duration. Some bus tours will also be available, for a 75-minute tour. Those interested in registering for a spot for this free event or learning more about how to participate are encouraged to visit the Art Walk tab on the home page of the baacindiana.org website. Tour times do have limited capacity, so register early!
BAAC President Kendra Baslar encourages the community to take part in this unique behind the scenes opportunity to see the impressive collection of art in our schools and to learn fun tidbits about the different installations. “It will be a great day to get out, walk and learn about the hidden gems of art in our downtown district!”
Saturday, October 2 nd , 2-7 pm: BAAC joins the Hispanic Community Advisory Committee to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at Fiesta Hispana. Back by popular demand, Trio de Colores will take the stage offering traditional Mariachi music from 3:00-4:15. Then, the same band members will transition into the lively Tropicante with upbeat Latin dance tunes from 4:45-6:00 pm. Fiesta-goers will be swinging and clapping to the Colombian "cumbia"; the Dominican "merengue"; the Venezuelan "tambor", & the Brazilian "samba"; Mexican “polkas,” and more.
This band offers something for everyone and truly captures the essence of many Hispanic cultures. The Hispanic Community Advisory Committee invites the local community to join them for this popular event, featuring delicious food, dancing, activities, and live music as they celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and raise funds for their annual scholarship.
