Highlands Physical Education
"Seven days without exercise makes one weak!"
What's been happening in PE??
The entire school has been working on short and long jump rope skills in physical education classes. Students have been practicing jumping/landing, twirling and so much more during class. On Friday, January 15th, Nick from the American Heart Association was here to talk about the AHA and Jump Rope for Heart. Several students left with Toby, the "Top Dog" award for having raised $150 on-line prior to the presentations. The final count is not in yet, but I'm fairly certain we beat our goal of $11,500!! Way to go Highlands!!!
The 5th graders had a blast skiing at Hylands Hills in Bloomington on Jan. 21. Check out the video below!
Jump Rope for Heart is over! If you still have donations that have not been turned in, please contact me ASAP!
Mrs. Mickschl's classes are finishing up Floor Hockey this week and Ms. Noel's (Mrs. Aunan's long-term sub) will be finishing up scooter games/activities.
Please note that TENNIS SHOES should be worn to PE!! Snow boots, Crocs, fashion boots, etc. should not be worn...this is for the SAFETY of your child! Thanks for being proactive in keeping your child safe during class.
Edina Education Fund Grant
I was recently awarded an Ed Fund Grant for my project, Total Body Fitness in Elementary PE.
What does this mean exactly?
Students will have the opportunity to use TRX (Total Body Resistance) suspension straps and BOSU (Both Sides Utilized) balls in physical education class next fall. My focus and training will improve students overall fitness, enhance skill and most importantly, it'll be new and fun!!
The use of TRX suspension straps and BOSU balls will help make learning more student-centered, as it is based completely on the student's ability level and current level of fitness. Using this equipment means that they are using their own body weight and gravity; they'll be able to adjust to their own personal fitness level. I love that students will have control of the intensity on the TRX bands just by walking their feet closer or further away from the anchoring point. As their fitness levels increase, students are able to adjust the placement of their feet so that they continue to stay challenged.
Below are a few exercises that can be used with the TRX straps and BOSU balls.

5th grade Ski Trip
All 5th graders were given the opportunity to learn how to ski last month at Hyland Hills. More experienced skiers were allowed to bypass a few stations and move to the "practice test" and "testing" stations.
Station work for new skiers
Students new to skiing spent some time learning the skills associated with skiing safely down the hill. These students wait patiently to learn the skill of turning.
Jump Rope for Heart
The week of Feb. 1-5th students spent time working on their jump rope skills. Our PE classes were combined in the afternoon to celebrate all of the hard work students have done to collect donations for the American Heart Association.

PE Homework REMINDER (Mrs. Mickschl's PE classes ONLY)
By May 2, 2016, all students are required, as part of their participation grade in PE to log onto Mrs. Mickschl's webpage and log their fitness minutes. Students have had and will continue to have the opportunity to do this homework assignment DURING PE class. iPads are available to use during PE classes, but the student has to make the choice to use them. Students can also do their homework from home...just search "Highlands PE" and look for my google page!
The number of entries varies by your child's grade...
1st and 2nd graders are required to log their fitness minutes at least 10 times before
May 2, 2016.
3rd, 4th and 5th graders are required to log their fitness minutes at least 20 times before May 2, 2016.
The activity needs to be physical...walking, running, swimming, gymnastics, hockey, sledding, playing tag, etc.
Only 1 entry may be completed each day
Activity must be outside of PE class, but could include recess, snack break, etc.
Activity must be within one week of logging the activity
Activity must be done PRIOR to entering it online
**I will print out a list for each class at the end of the month so that your child may count how many times they have logged their fitness homework.
