Highlands Physical Education
"Seven days without exercise makes one weak!"
What's been happening in PE??
The entire school has been working on short and long jump rope skills in physical education classes. Students have been practicing jumping/landing, twirling and so much more during class. On Friday, January 15th, Nick from the American Heart Association was here to talk about the AHA and Jump Rope for Heart. Several students left with Toby, the "Top Dog" award for having raised $150 on-line prior to the presentations. The final count is not in yet, but I'm fairly certain we beat our goal of $11,500!! Way to go Highlands!!!
The 5th graders had a blast skiing at Hylands Hills in Bloomington on Jan. 21. Check out the video below!
Jump Rope for Heart is over! If you still have donations that have not been turned in, please contact me ASAP!
Mrs. Mickschl's classes are finishing up Floor Hockey this week and Ms. Noel's (Mrs. Aunan's long-term sub) will be finishing up scooter games/activities.
Please note that TENNIS SHOES should be worn to PE!! Snow boots, Crocs, fashion boots, etc. should not be worn...this is for the SAFETY of your child! Thanks for being proactive in keeping your child safe during class.
Edina Education Fund Grant
I was recently awarded an Ed Fund Grant for my project, Total Body Fitness in Elementary PE.
What does this mean exactly?
Students will have the opportunity to use TRX (Total Body Resistance) suspension straps and BOSU (Both Sides Utilized) balls in physical education class next fall. My focus and training will improve students overall fitness, enhance skill and most importantly, it'll be new and fun!!
The use of TRX suspension straps and BOSU balls will help make learning more student-centered, as it is based completely on the student's ability level and current level of fitness. Using this equipment means that they are using their own body weight and gravity; they'll be able to adjust to their own personal fitness level. I love that students will have control of the intensity on the TRX bands just by walking their feet closer or further away from the anchoring point. As their fitness levels increase, students are able to adjust the placement of their feet so that they continue to stay challenged.
Below are a few exercises that can be used with the TRX straps and BOSU balls.
