Cougar Connection
SEPTEMBER 2, 2022
From Principal Dr. Barnette
September 2, 2022
Dear Cougar Families,
Instead of trying to put into words how magical Back to School Night was last night, I’m going to share some photos and a video montage with you (see photos below). We are grateful to have such a supportive parent community. Weren’t the teacher's everything you hoped for and more?! We are so blessed to have such an experienced, caring, and dedicated team of educators at Diegueño.
Our ASB/Leadership students and their advisor, Ms. VonBorstel, hosted fun activities for Welcome Week including a balloon toss competition (which was perfectly timed to combat the heat). See our Instagram and Facebook feeds for photos of the fun. Today, PTSA sent your kids into the long weekend with popsicles given out at dismissal. This made all of us happy! I’d also like to thank PTSA for serving our staff Jersey Mike’s yesterday before Back to School Night and for bagels and coffee this morning. We are definitely feeling the love.
I hope you’ll join me next Wednesday for our monthly principal’s coffee (AKA Bagels with Dr. Barnette). We’ll gather at 8:45 AM on Wednesday, September 7 in the Learning Commons. Please share what you would like to learn about, discuss, or celebrate in this Google survey.
We wish you a safe and enjoyable LONG weekend.
Go Cougars!
Dr. Celeste Barnette

Parents/Guardians of e-bike riders,
We have had quite a few requests to charge e-bikes lately, but we do not have the means to charge them. Please make sure that your student e-bikes are fully charged before coming to school.
A message from La Costa Canyon's Principal, Justin Conn...
LCC Football season is upon us and there are a few things that middle school parents/guardians need to know!
- Middle school students are expected to be supervised by parents/guardians. They should NOT be dropped off with no adult supervision. Students will NOT be allowed in the gates without a parent/guardian.
- No BACKPACKS are allowed. Smaller bags will be searched by security.
- No bringing in outside food and drinks.
- The games are now CASHLESS! You MUST purchase tickets prior to coming to ALL/ANY games.
- Here is the QR code or visit GOFAN.CO
From our Counseling Office
The first three weeks of school have gone so fast, and it is so wonderful to see so many happy and engaged students on our campus. The kids are transitioning well, as
middle school can be a confusing time, for parents as well as their kids. Your
child is becoming more independent, yet still needs your support. As your child's
independence increases, it is important to stay involved by lending support and
guidance at home. One area we want to pay particular attention to is how your teen
views their intelligence and abilities. How they see themselves in these two areas is
shown to have an impact on not only how they adjust academically to middle school
but also how they adapt emotionally. In the American Psychological Association’s
article, "Middle School Malaise," psychologists note that students who adapt
positively to middle school are those that believe their intelligence and abilities can
change over time; by trying new things, experiencing failure, learning from mistakes,
and knowing learning takes patience, effort and time (a GROWTH Mindset).
When students view their intelligence as fixed; they believe there is no room for
improvement and experience feeling discouraged, wanting to give up, or being afraid to
make mistakes. By being attentive to how they view their intelligence and abilities, we
can step in when needed to help our teens become skilled in positively reframing how
they see themselves.
As always, we are here to support our families.

Attendance Corner
· Report all absences to the Attendance office. Parents/guardians have 48 hours following the absence to verify and clear absences. After 48 hours, any unverified absences will automatically be considered truant.
· Call or email 24-48 in advance for an “Off-Campus” pass, if picking up students early for appointments. Students will need to pick up a pass before school on the day of their appointment.
· For the safety of our students, a Parent or Guardian will need to sign out a student through attendance in the administration building. Students cannot walk or ride their bikes/e-bikes home.
Thank you for your cooperation
Parents/Guardians regarding item dropoff...
If you need to drop off a lunch from home or any other forgotten item, you can leave it on the Forgotten Items cart just outside our front office door. Our nutrition services provide delicious, healthy, and FREE meals (breakfast and lunch) to all students daily. We kindly ask that you do not have meals delivered to school (through Grub Hub, etc.).
