A MINUTE WITH DR. MAXWELL
Dear East Families,
The month of February is upon us which means it is Parent/Teacher Conference time. Please make it a priority to meet with your child's teacher. They are being held formally on Thursday, February 6th and Tuesday, February 11th from 4:00-7:00 PM. If neither of these evenings work for your schedule, please make alternative arrangements with your child's teacher. We look forward to sharing your child's progress and ways you can help your child at home. We want to ensure every child is on the right track for success.
I also want to stress the importance of timeliness and attendance at school. It is very challenging when students miss hands-on activities and differentiation during the school day. Please be aware that we understand illnesses cannot be avoided, but we also want to stress the importance of the learning that take place in the school day and how it impact the child's education. Instruction begins promptly at 8:00 AM. Students are dismissed to their classrooms at 7:50 AM.
On January 15th your child came home with a permission slip for East’s Candy Bar Sales. Candy bar boxes were sent home on January 22rd and are due February 7th. This fundraiser is sponsored by the school (The Otis Spunkmeyer fundraiser was sponsored by PTO.) and all the proceeds will be used to purchase technology resources for students in the classroom and for staff recognition items (prizes, luncheon for our teacher work day, etc.). If you haven’t signed your child’s permission slip, please request one from your child’s teacher or the office. We are grateful for any participation and sale. Every item sold will benefit our students and teachers. Please remember that fundraising is an option, not a requirement.
Enjoy your February,
Jessica Maxwell, Principal
MRS. CRIDDLE'S CORNER
March 5th is right around the corner and you want to be sure to save this date. Our PTO Grilled Cheese & Chili Supper Family Auction Night is Thursday, March 5th. It’s a fun event for all who attend. We have a live and silent auction along with dinner. Here is our volunteer form, if you want to make a donation of time or an auction item. Please join us on March 5th. Be on the lookout for more information about classroom items and other prizes that will be auctioned off that evening.
Thank you,
Shauna Criddle, Assistant Principal
MRS. MOYERS' MESSAGE
If your student asked you to drop them off at a building so they could play a game with the person or people inside, would you do it without asking questions like: Who is going to be there? What game will you be playing? Not many of us would be likely to do that without checking to make sure that the building, the game, and the people there were all safe for our student, right?
Is the same true for allowing your student online access? Keeping our children safe online is as important as keeping them safe in the real world. Unfortunately, there are people and websites that are easily accessible to anyone, including kids, that are extremely inappropriate and potentially unsafe. The good news is that adults have a lot of power to make sure that the games and websites our children are accessing are safe and to limit their access to those that are inappropriate and unsafe. The following link will take you to a website with a lot of very good, practical information to keep your student safe online: https://wetheparents.org/internet-safety-for-parents.
If there is anything I can do to help you learn more about Internet safety and keeping your student safe online, please let me know!
NEWS FROM THE NURSES
This is the time we usually see an increase in sickness (stomach bug, strep throat, flu, etc). Please do not send your child until they are 24 hours free of fever (without the use of Tylenol/Motrin), vomiting and diarrhea…Any child who comes back before the 24 hour period may be sent home to prevent the spread of illness (unless a doctor's note is provided).
Remind your child to wash their hands, cough into their elbow, drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep. Don’t forget to eat your fruits and vegetables. (Don’t forget to wash those water bottles daily with soap and water or use a fresh clean water bottle!)
READ TO SUCCEED AND READ-A-THON
Read to Succeed is a program used to motivate Kindergarten through 4th grade students to read more. Students who read and log six hours earn a ticket to Six Flags St. Louis. This year, the program is online. Families can go to the Read to Succeed Parent Portal, enter their child's unique class code, and then create an account. From there, you can log your minutes! Follow this link to get started : https://feedback.sixflags.com/rts/parents/welcome.aspx Please contact your child's teacher or Mrs. Palisch if you have questions or need your unique class code!
This year we will also participate in a school wide Read-a-Thon. This is a great way for our school to raise money to support reading. Last year, the money raised supported our summer book bus and supplied teachers with resources to engage readers. We plan to use the money raised this year to make our summer book bus even better! This year's Read-a-Thon will coincide with Read Across America week in the beginning of March. Please be on the lookout for information sent home with your child towards the end of February.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE OF THE 3-5 YEAR OLD CHILD
Below you will find some activities you can do to stimulate your preschool child’s speech and language.
1. Using words he/she has trouble with frequently in your speech to provide a good speech model for him/her.
2. Talking about similarities or differences between things.
3. Helping your child classify objects (for example, talking about what kinds of things you can ride in).
4. Continuing to show your pleasure at his development in speech, language, and thought.
5. Encouraging your child to use language to express his feelings, ideas, dreams, wishes, and fears.
Commenting on what you did or how you think your child feels; this will stimulate more speech than a direct question.
