RIVERSIDE REVIEW
10.08.2021
Principal Message
Dear RSI Families,
Did you know that RSI is one of the only schools in HSE with a Mathematics Museum? Amy Knerr, Teacher Development Specialist for mathematics, works with all four intermediate schools but devoted time during COVID to build beautiful math experiences for our Hawks.
Amy Knerr shared the following: All children need opportunities to play with mathematical ideas, explore patterns and relationships, and enjoy the creativity of mathematics. The RSI Math Museum serves as an extension of our classrooms and provides space and time to tinker, be curious, share ideas, and think strategically. Inspiration for the museum came from a visit to MoMath, the National Museum of Mathematics in New York City.
Mathematically proficient students discern patterns and structure and use tools and technology to deepen their understanding. Materials in the Math Museum such as pattern blocks, snap cubes, and tangram pieces allow students to explore number relationships and solve problems using multiple representations.
We are thankful for Amy's work around this project and love seeing our Hawks engage in deeper mathematical thinking.
Sincerely,
Dana Kaminski, Ph.D.

Covid Info for Families
Please remember to send your student to school healthy. If a student is ill and has any of the symptoms of Covid listed below, we encourage you to get your student tested using a PCR test, which is available via Fishers Health Department (COVID Vaccine | Fishers, IN - Official Website) or the Indiana Department of Health (ISDH - Novel Coronavirus: COVID-19 Testing Information). PCR tests are the most accurate and provide less risk of a false positive or negative result. A visit to your physician is also suggested if you feel this is not Covid-related, then a doctor's note would be needed for your student to return to school. Please do not send your child to school ill or while waiting for Covid test results.
Symptoms to monitor for:

Cough
Shortness of Breath or difficulty breathing

Families Invited to Panorama Parent Night Webinar
In the spring of 2019, HSE Schools began using the Panorama survey to better understand student’s experience in our schools. This survey helps HSE teachers, administrators and counselors gauge student growth and understanding around social and emotional competencies, which contribute to academic success and increase engagement in the classroom.
The district will be hosting a Parent Night Webinar to share information and answer common questions about the Panorama survey. We will discuss what data is collected and how HSE uses this data to help inform what services and supports are provide to students in order to increase academic success.
The webinar will be held on October 12th at 7:30PM. All HSE Families are invited to attend. Please pre-register for the event here.
If you can’t attend the webinar, the event will be recorded and posted to the HSE Schools website after concluding.
If you would like to learn more about how social-emotional learning can help your student better manage emotion, achieve positive goals, and experience increased success in the classroom, please visit: HSE Schools – What is Social Emotional Learning?

Social Emotional Learning
5th Grade-
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your student applied the full goal-setting process they learned in this unit to work toward a 10-minute goal of their choice.
Try This at Home:
Ask your student about the goal-setting progress they learned in this unit and why it's important. Encourage them to set a new short-term goal that's right for them and to follow the process they learned. Check in along the way to see how it's going.
6th Grade-
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your student learned strategies for how to stay on track toward their goals. They learned how to monitor their own progress, decide if they need to try new strategies, and determine when their goal is complete.
Question:
Ask your student about a goal they’re actively working toward. Ask them if they are encountering any roadblocks and how you can help them determine the next steps forward.

Response-to-Instruction (RtI)
Response to Instruction (RtI) is a general education initiative designed to provide high quality instruction and interventions matched to student needs and using learning rate over time and level of performance to make important educational decisions. The RtI model is based on a three-tiered model of service delivery with a focus on early intervention and prevention of academic and behavioral concerns. Data collected during this process provides valuable information regarding students’ educational progress and response to interventions. Students who do not demonstrate a response to well-implemented, scientifically-based interventions at the Tier 3 level would be referred for an educational evaluation to determine eligibility for special education. RtI is a component of HSE’s Child Find Process.
