Learning Targets
Leaders of Their Own Learning
We know that...
learning targets are goals for lessons, projects, units, and courses. They are derived from our standards and used to assess growth and achievement. They are written in concrete, student-friendly language--beginning with "I CAN"--shared with students, posted in the classroom, and tracked carefully by students and teachers during the process of learning.
Where should I be in the process?
- Learning Targets are visibly posted in my classroom and I introduce students to our learning target at the best point during the lesson--I unpack the learning target, identify key vocabulary, and submit criteria for success.
- I plan my instruction to ensure that all of my students can meet the learning targets.
- I am using checks for understanding(formative assessments) to monitor my students' progress toward the learning target.
- My students come to expect learning targets to guide their lessons.
- My students can articulate to peers and their families what they are learning.

Formative Assessment Strategy: Wordle
Wordle is a tool that can be used as an assessment for generating "word clouds" from text. Students indicate their understanding of a word, concept or objective. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak the cloud with different fonts, layouts, and color. Wordles can be made by the teacher or by the students. http://www.wordle.net/
Formative Assessment Strategy: Circle Map
Circle Map is one of the eight Thinking Maps that can be used to examine students’ understanding of an idea. The topic is placed in a small circle in the middle of a larger circle. Students generate examples of their learning that help the teacher assess the extent of their knowledge.
